Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FireFox and Lookups

Using Firefox makes my Alpha Five web application run much faster. The problem is with a lookup grid.

Under IE if I select a record from a lookup grid, it fills in defined fields on the original screen. That selection is displayed before I submit that change.

Firefox does not display that selection before I submit. Once I click submit I get the desired result but it doesn't display it as soon as I select a record from the lookup. I have to click submit before my selection is displayed.

I was also using WingDing fonts. IE was okay with that but Firefox doesn't like it. I am changing them to gif images in order to work with Firefox. Are there any other difference I need to be aware of?

The speed advantage of Firefox seems significant to me. I'm surprised not to see comments from others on this subject. I'm new to Firefox so maybe there are disadvantages that I'm not yet aware of. Are other people seeing that speed improvement?

Do you have a sample to attach or at least a screenshot? I can't see this behaviour myself.

As for fonts it is always recommended to use more generic fonts or images instead of WinDings otherwise non-Windows users will not be able to see them.

        Hi,

Thanks - I wonder if the field names, or naming in the DBF or SQL database are causing problems, as this works fine for me in FF with mySQL.

Haven't seen this with my apps also using Firefox. or any other browser.

related to speed: Google Chrome is the fastest in my experience...

            Re: FireFox and Lookups

I want the lookup field to only be filled by making a selection from the lookup grid. To do this I need to NOT allow someone to type their own data in that lookup field. I added code to the A5W page so a user could not enter their own data in that field. I think this is a fairly common technique.

            Code:
            <%a5 x_out.grdItemDetail.Output.Body.Grid_HTML=stritran(x_out.grdItemDetail.Output.Body.Grid_HTML,".Company\"",".Company\" READONLY") %>
This worked great when using an IE browser but it causes display problems in both Firefox and Google Chrome as explained above. Does anyone have similiar code that works in all 3 browsers or some other way to lock that lookup field and yet still allow a lookup grid to be used?
