Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Server service for WAS (what to do )

I am finding an increasing need for a service for my latest web application.
This is principally because as it runs in real time it also feeds back stats to the users.
Currently I have 1 runtime of A5 that loads when the WAS loads both courtesy of Always UP.
The runtime in low server-usage does:-
    1. is eliminating orphans slightly after creation.
    2. Rebuilds indexes of a certain session folder that has expired sessions archived with it as well.
    3. Monitors new user creation for fraudulent entries
4 Upgrades the statistics so they are only a few minutes old.
    5. Does a live error analysis
    -----
I can continue using the runtime to accomplish this, and I'm sure I'll find plenty more uses. But somehow using a runtime to do this irks me as, a half baked solution.
So if I've found this need for a live service for my web app, I'm sure other devs have as well,
Is there an ideal tool out there for this, in specific for A5, and WAS.
Thus can anyone give me lead to what they use apart from DW (Directory Watcher ) which is great but not exactly A5 dbf orientated.

This is a 100% A5 oriented "live service" or scheduler, written in A5 to schedule any Alpha Five web process.

I congratulate you on your creativity in developing the itaskman,
Currently I'm looking for more of a traditional NT Service, however I certainly can see the benefits in a 3rd party online service,
I mat return to your shop later for purchase though. :-)

The iTaskMan is just a robust Alpha Five wrapper around two public domain utiltiies, CRONTAB and CURL. I built it more as an exercise than something to sell. However, it is pretty cool and I will put some marketing against it when I get a chance. People are nervous about one of its features - in subscription mode, it will launch YOUR process or report from MY server. It sound inherently not-secure. Its a password protected operation now, but now that I understand how PayPal vaildates purchase requests, I will add a similar "server-to-server" routine that will provide even more assurance that the request is valid.

A typical "NT Service" is exactly the same thing, CRONTAB to launch the process. With Alpha, there is no executable code, so you need CURL to fire the A5W page which would containt the xbasic code.

The solution I was actually considering was to Roll my own MFC type service App in C++, (MFC isn't ideal for this but it is fast to develop in).
However my real headache is I don't know enough about the dbf format and indexes and operations to guarantee a quick useful solution. Your method obviously works around this so, I may well choose it.
I believe it's better to find the ideal house and buy it than to try to build your own. Let someone else have the worries. :-)

The trick is the CURL.EXE. It lets you fire off an A5W page which would contain a script to run your process. You should put in some password protection as a URL parameer so that not just anyone can open up that page, thereby running the script. You can also combine CURL with WatchDirectory, in fact its best, to ensure the scripts fire in sequence, not all at once (if you had multiple scheduled). If you run a bunch at the exact same time, you will kill the server.
