I have a web based appilcation. The client wants to be able to enter a Sales number and then have the invoice of that sales number displayed in a new window. The client does not want this in a grid, so I have to use a dialog. I have ordered the XBasic Level I book, but they are out of stock and havenot yet received it, so I was wondernig what the syntax would be to look up a Sales record (by Sales Number) in an Alpha5 DBF table and then pass that Sales Number to the invoice web page so that the invoice can display the proper information.

Before I get to your question, I need to say that it is a real tribute to Alpha Software that you can get a client and create software without knowing any Xbasic!

I'm not sure if you mean that the selection dialog would be a dialog, or the invoice would be a dialog, or both.

If the selection is a dialog, then you would only need one field and a Submit button. You have several options....if the user already knows the sales number, then it could be a text box. If they need other info to identify which sales number to use, then you could add a lookup.

You probably don't need anything in the declarations, initialize and activate events. In the validate event you can check if they entered anything in the field with something like
if alltrim(currentform.controls.SalesNo.value)=""
Currentform.hasError=.t.
Currentform.ErrorMessage="Enter the sales number"
end if

and check if they entered a valid number using
if exist(....) -< check the help for use.
Currentform.hasError=.t.
Currentform.ErrorMessage="Sales number is invalid"
end if

Then, once you 've got a valid number, you have a couple more choices.
One good choice is to put the sales number in the URL with something like
vSN=alltrim(currentform.controls.SalesNo.value)
Currentform.RedirectTarget="invoicepage.a5w?sn="+vSN

Then in the invoice page, sn becomes a page variable. If that page contains a grid, then create an argument equal to sn and use the argument in the grid filter.

If it contains a dialog, let me know and I'll give you some Xbasic for that.

I have the search dialog, one control: SearchBox. The WtyNum is validated by the search field to make sure it exists in the database. If it doesn't exist it generates an error. That way I know the WtyNum is good if we hit the AfterValidate event.
This is the code in its AfterValidate section:


vgWtyFound = alltrim(CurrentForm.Controls.SearchBox.Value)
Response.Redirect("wty_search_res.a5w?vWtyFnd="+vgWtyFound)

This is the Arugument definition from wty_search_res.a5wcmp: aWtyFnd (Descr: value populated from a session variable named vWtyFnd)

The filter: Wtynum=:aWtyFnd

When I search for a wty that Iknow is in the database I get a grid in wty_search_res that is empty.

Got it working. Don't really know how, which is scary. I think I finally flushed out the old file.

I'm regularly stopping the browser, flushing the history, cache to clean up during development and testing.

IE is particularily fond of keeping and using it's cache instead of what I want it to use.

IE is also much smarter than we are and uses it's interpretation of what the HTML code is intended to be rather than strictly what it should be. Mozilla (FireFox) does a more exact interpretation.
