Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

pass user id to a report

How do I pass the external UserID in the log in page to a report. I have neabled web security, have enabled the xternal user id, and have named it vg_UserID. I have a dialog that has several buttons and when I click a button I want one of several reports to be generated, but filtered according to the UserID that has been assigned to particular users.

This is the code for the Server event for the Button on the Dialog.
    vg_AgentIF = session.vg_UserID

The report filter (in the report) looks like this:
Agentid=Var->vgAgentIF (AgentID is a filed in the master table)

vg_AgentIF has been defined as a gloabl variable in a code segment. vg_UserID is what I have named the external user identifier field variable from the web security page. What I would ultimately like is for joe to log on, be assigned a userid of ID83501AXC and have the report filter its records based on that ID83501AXC value.

    Would really appreciate the help.

I have looked at the many example sin the web section and have not been able to find what I am looking for. I have tried several of them with no results.

Remove your filter from the report itself. Create a dialog, go to Aftervalidate event and click Insert > Genies > Print Report. Use that genie to create your report request code, including using your session variable userid as the filter. I suppose you could create your code using that genie, then transfer it to the server event for a button, modified slightly for each button to select the proper report, I have not tried that, but it should work.

Re: pass user id to a report

Thank you. I've done that before and just forgot about it. How, though, do I pick up the session varible for the identifier field that is associated with each user that logs in? I have tried all kinds of examples, in the books, on the message board, in the videos and I just can't seem to pick it up before it gets to the report. Obvisouly I am missing something. Can you please help?

Never Mind. I got it figured out using the a5ws_logged_in_user_values(pUser,request,session) funtion. That is a slick function.

Re: pass user id to a report

It already exists, named session.vg_UserID the way you appear to have it set. Put ?session.vg_UserID on one of your pages, login and see if your ID shows up.

I get this because you said
vg_UserID is what I have named the external user identifier field variable from the web security page.
That means your id is in that session variable if logged in, automatically.

Now, for security sake you really should rename that variable to this:

__protected__vg_UserID (double underscores each), making the session variable session.__protected__vg_UserID. Read up on Protected Variables to understand why.

Steve, thank you so much for your assistance. I used the built function to retrieve the user settings. It works great and is a lot easier to work with and much more reliable.

Re: pass user id to a report

Steve, for some reason my session.vg_UserID was never populated with the user id from the log in screen.
Switching to the built in a5ws_logged_in_user_values(pUser,request,session) made it real easy. Thanks again for your assistance.
