Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email Tutorial?

    Hi All,

    Is there a tutorial to demonstrate and show how, to set up the Email and send replies to either the user and/or administrator?

    The afas/supplied WAS samples are a start...

    REALLY depends in what context you want to use it though: http://afas.alphasoftware.com/Sample.../sendEmail.a5w

        Re: Email Tutorial?

        Hi Andrea,

        The context I'm looking for, is when someone registers and an email is sent to thank them, and an email is sent to the administrator advising that a new person has registered.

          Re: Email Tutorial?

          Hi Keith,

          Here is what I do. I have a dialog where the user registers and then I go to a code only page with a bunch of processing code, but as part of that code, here is what I do to send myself an email telling me that a new user just registered:

          '''''send an email to myself notifying me of the new user who just registered

          dim tblr as p
          tblr=table.open("[pathalias.adb_path]\registration")
          query.filter="userid='"+session.userid+"'"
          query.order=""
          query.options=""
          tblr.query_create()

          e_to="[email protected]"
          e_subj="A new user just registered"
          e_msg="<html>A new user just registered. Here are the details:"+"<br><br>"
          e_msg=e_msg+"User ID: "+tblr.userid+"<br>"
          e_msg=e_msg+"Email: "+tblr.Email+"</html>"

          tblr.close()

          'email_send(e_to,e_subj,e_msg)

          vTo = e_to
          dim pm as P
          dim ps as P
          dim email_result as l
          flag = email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.aol.com", 25, "advancedsolns", "yourpassword goes here")
          if flag = .f. then
          ?"error"
          end
          end if
          pm._to = vTo
          pm.from = "[email protected]"
          pm.from_alias = "AdvancedSolns"
          pm.subject = e_subj
          pm.attachments = "a file name can go here"
          pm.html_message = e_msg
          email_result = email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
          email_smtp_close(ps)

          Notice that I was using email_send(), but I have added additional code that Selwyn recommended that works more reliably on the remote server because it does not depend on an email profile.

            Re: Email Tutorial?

            Keith,

            I do something similar. This is from a membership application. I use email_send2() with the profile, and it's never given me any trouble. In this case I'm sending 3 individual emails.

            Code:

            '==== send email
            Dim vResult as L
            Dim vMessage as P
            vMessage.To="[EMAIL="[email protected]"][email protected][/EMAIL]"
            vMessage.Subject="WSAHQ New Member"
            if alltrim(CurrentForm.Controls.vJoinType.value)="new"
             vMessage.Message=session.__protected__CorpName+" has joined as a new member."
            else
             vMessage.Message=session.__protected__CorpName+" has renewed their membership."
            end if
            vResult = email_send2(vMessage,"wsahq",.t.,.t.)
            vMessage.To="[EMAIL="[email protected]"][email protected][/EMAIL]"
            vResult = email_send2(vMessage,"wsahq",.t.,.t.)
            vMessage.To="[EMAIL="[email protected]"][email protected][/EMAIL]"
            vResult = email_send2(vMessage,"wsahq",.t.,.t.)
            You can also send one email to a list of people. In this case, the email is going to a list of people in the bcc field, and there is some other processing I left out. It's worth pointing out that the To field will take a crlf separated list, but the bcc field has to be comma separated (that cost me a few night's sleep!)

            Code:

            ltbl=table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\listings.dbf")
            query.description = "Listing Changes"
            query.order = ""
            query.filter = "Tochange"
            query.options = ""
            lqry=ltbl.query_create()
            vNumRecs = lqry.records_get()
            if vNumRecs=0
             session.EmailResult = "There are no changes to email"
            else
             vBody="The Dalhart MLS Listing changes were:"+crlf()
             ltbl.fetch_first()
             while .not. ltbl.fetch_eof()
            .
            .
            .
               vBody=vBody+"Listing "+ltbl.Mls_number+" was changed"+crlf()
            .
             .
            .
            end while
             lqry.drop()
             ltbl.close()
            end if
            if vNumRecs>0
            dim vMessage as p
            vMessage.To = "[EMAIL="[email protected]"][email protected][/EMAIL]"
            vMessage.From="[EMAIL="[email protected]"][email protected][/EMAIL]"
            vMessage.From_alias="Dalhart Board of Realtors"
            vMessage.Subject="Dalhart MLS Listing Changes"
            '==== get list of email addresses
            vEmailList=table.external_record_content_get("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\realtors.dbf","alltrim(email)")+" "
            vEmailList=remove_blank_lines(vEmailList)
            vMessage.BCC=crlf_to_comma(vEmailList)
            vMessage.Message=vBody
            if email_send2(vMessage,"dbor",.f.,.f.,.f.)
             session.EmailResult="Emails were successfully sent"
            else
             session.EmailResult="Emails could not be sent. Please try again later."

              Thanks Guys,

              I will try and digest the sample code.

              Pat, I see that you have used "session.__protected__CorpName", will that get picked up from the Security Framework?

                The WAS samples have plenty of samples for both registration and sending email

                  Keith,

                  The protected session variable could come from the security framework, but in this case, I have the person either enter or select a company name. Since the prior processing requires them to pay on-line for the membership, I haven't had trouble with bogus entries.
