Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Speed revisited ...

Speed is always an issue, isn't it?

Doing a google search for ajax software brings up our alpha software as #1. But I also saw another, called WaveMaker and tried some of their demos. WOW. What speed! Looks as good as a desktop. They say it takes 5 minutes to build and that AJAX is built in. No coding.

I am a loyal Alpha fan. But that speed improvement is hard to ignore!

Will version 10 be that good? And how soon can we expect it?

    No coding
Hmmm, I am always suspiscious when that is said.
I'm sure Ashton Tate once promoted DBase2 as "no progammers needed"
    But back to speed,
The other day there was a thread here comparing A5 with PHP, The question I always wonder is, How well designed was the said database that is so slow?
With just a smidgen of experience with AJAX now I have learned that, 'design' is important. Example, as the users cursor passes over each of the AJAX enabled controls on a form, a message can be sent back to the server requesting info for updates of the form etc. But how many of these messages are actually important? I certainly believe we will be seeing near remote desktop capability with ver 10,. However some developers will achieve great results and others will continue to bloat the internet, and they will in turn demand more speed.

      Gary,

I checked out WaveMaker's web site. I don't see any reporting capabilities? And role based security is only available in the commercail version. They won't even give a price on the web site - you have to call. So you can imagine what the price must be like. Whenever I see one of these "competing" products, I think of Alpha's HUGE user-friendly function library - and the ability to easily create your own UDFs. Alpha is still the most easy to use and powerful package all wrapped into one. At least that's how I see it (I know you do too).

I checked out Wavemaker also in decmber, and I agree with Peter's comments. In addition I got fed up with having to define "BIND" variables for each and every field on the database I wanted to connect to. Very cumbersome...

In Alpha, once you have a connections string, all table and fields ar available straight away...

Also I did not find the speed of forms very fast after all. Even if they claim to use AJAX for for it. And last: I found the development performance getting slower and slower if you include a lot of components...

No, I am putting my bets on V10.

            Re: Speed revisited ...

            1) Did you take into account the initial load time, before the application is started?
            2) Did you see the limited way to change the appearance of the application and web pages? Great if you like shades of blue only.
            3) Did you actually upload the product and tried converting one your Alpha web apps with it? You will really run into the limitations then.
            4) Did you notice the forum -near dead- activity compared to Alpha's?
            5) Did you take into account the std SQL DB connectivity Alpha has compared to this or any other product?

I may sound like an Alpha preacher, but "good look demo's" should be evaluated the right way. I challenge you to dig into this product, or morfik, or smartclient, webdev or any other currently in the rat race... and convince me please. I will convert without feeling guilty. For now, my bets are on Alpha.
Mind you, i have seen some pre-release Alpha stuff. So maybe I am biased...But even before I saw that, I already have noticed the shortcomings of some mentioned in this thread.
No inbuilt reportwriter (yet), not same quality external (SQL) DB support, User / base community help / activity not comparible, hybrid desktop/web apps not possible, grid possibilities are nothing compared to what Alpha has now (navigation, possibilities, search, link, and tabbed grids out of the box..)...

Alpha: release your V10 soon: What I have seen now, you can compete with head and shoulders above what's out there now.

Mind you , I am talking web apps. So this is utilised best in areas where high speed Internet (adsl) connections are a common and widespread thing. This may not apply to all areas of the US (yet), but certainly in NL.

We are very familiar with Wavemaker and all the other competitors (we take all potential competitors very seriously)

Putting aside our massive price benefit, I think you will find that ease of use and very powerful AJAX and speed, are VERY high on the agenda.

We dont think that we will disappoint:) Please stay tuned.

I'm late to the thread, but ...

I took a look at WaveMaker several months ago, and while it's off to a decent start, it doesn't have anywhere near the capabilities of Alpha today.
