Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    To to Set default Value

    I am building new web application and connecting to MS sql server.
    I need some help/guid on how to do the following.

    I designed a grid with detail view/form to update. The form has
    A. UPDATE DATE - for add record I want to set it to deault current date/time but for update I want to display what is in the db.

    B. UPDATE USERID - I want to capture userid when user create new record or update existing record.

    I searched and read the help and forum but still cannot find any example on how to achieve the above.
    I hope somebody can give some guide/ clue on how to achieve the above

    Re: To to Set default Value

    Hi,

    I've tried the following code but still it does not work.
    If I update the other tect fields, it update the field but it does not update the Update_Date

    function CanUpdateRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as p )
    with PageVariables

    'DataSubmitted.update_user = session.__protected__UserId
    DataSubmitted.Update_Date = date()
    'DataSubmitted.Tochange = .t.

    Result.Cancel = .f.
    Result.ErrorHTML = ""
    end with
    end function

      Re: To to Set default Value

      According to your posts you are using a MS SQL table. So the xbasic code won't work. You are going to have to use SQL update and/or insert (SQL language).

        Re: To to Set default Value

        Oh man, I thoght A5 will automatically generate the sql. Is there any other workaround /short cut to this since I have a 60 tables to update. This that each form need to be manually 'update' using sql.

          Re: To to Set default Value

          You could use Active Link tables. Then you could use the xbasic and the changes would be reflected in your MS SQL tables via the active link tables.

            Hi Dan thanks for the reply.
            This is what I've done
            1. Create an active link under control panel. Able to view data in default grid and form

            2. IN web project crontrol panel, I tried to create web component grid, but when I tried to connect to database, there is no active link option
            a. Alpha 5 dbf - tried this option but cannot find my active link table
            b. Remote via ado
            c. Remote vis alpha dao - this is what I used before.

            Appreciate any guide on this

              Re: To to Set default Value

              Hi Muhd, to get your active link table to show you probably need to refresh the control panel. The refresh button is up on the main tool bar in A5. Then try to create your web component.

                Re: To to Set default Value

                Active Link tables are not available for use in Web Components. AlphaDAO should be used to connect to external data sources. The process to update data from an Active Link table and updating the same data from a web component is essentially the same. The use of an Active Link table would just add unnecessary overhead.

                If data being entered directly into the grid is being updated in the source table, then data entered in an event should also update. If it does not, there may be some error in the event code. In some cases, a SQL view may have restricted updates, but that restriction would be applied at the source database level.

                If you are inserting a new record rather than updating an existing record, that is a different process and may have other limitations.

                  Re: To to Set default Value

                  Thanks Jerry that clarify abit,
                  1.I've tried with enable the debug and Enable Update sql in the debug properties
                  2. RUn first time and change the text content, it update the update date
                  3. Second time change the text control content, the sql generated as below:

                  Row: 1 UPDATE dbo.Vendor_Category SET Description = :DESCRIPTION WHERE Category = :OLD_Category
                  Parameters: LLLLKJ, HWH

                  Why is it that the update_date is not updated. What I want is to update the Update_date with current datetime when any changes being done .
