Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Native Query Problem

    Hello,

I am still futzing around in Alpha5 and have come across a real snag.

I am attempting to run a native query to populate a passive-link table. The query runs as a "pass-through" query in Access 2003 without any problems.
They both use the same ODBC driver and the same DSN.

I am connecting to a Progress database.

The "spec-ins" and coments1 fields are both considered to be memo fields by Alpha5.

It stalls when I try to run it in Alpha5 V9. The query is listed below.
Any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

    Thanks,

    Rich

    Code:
    select "cust-id", "spec-ins", coments1 from PUB.customer where "cust-id" not in ('001391','008378','030400','045700','046226','28578','30999','31286','31468','31717','A01064','A01449','A02904','A04494','A04898','A05045','B02874','B02877','B02956','B03238','B05467','B06374','C00551','S00888')

    Re: Native Query Problem

Are the memo fields actually meant to be memo fields? You can always change how the fields are interpreted in Alpha5 by changing the field type in the passive link table definition.

Also, do you know the limitations of "in" queries in Progress? For Oracle for example it is 100 (e.g. only up to 100 items can be listed in the "in" list) but the value might be much smaller in Access?

      Re: Native Query Problem

      Rich,
The Progress SQL database uses a proprietary ODBC driver--not sure of its cost and hopefully the driver supplied by the database you are connecting to provides it. Check out the ODBC drivers you have listed and maybe it is there....a generic ODBC will not work as far as I have determined.

Here is a quote from doing some googling a while back...
If Progress is installed on the PC that you are using there should be a "MERANT 3.60 32-BIT Progress SQL92 v9.1B" Driver that you can use in the Windows ODBC Data Source Administrator, under the System DSN tab.
---hopefully this is helpful to someone who also has a Danish heritage!! :)

        Re: Native Query Problem

Thanks for your input. The query I used works in Progress without issue. The query works in "pass-through" mode in Access without issue. "pass-through" mode in Access appears to be the same as "native" sql in Alpha5. The query stalls in Alpha5 and no where else.

          Re: Native Query Problem

          Mike,

Thanks for your input. I am using the Merant ODBC driver. When I create a "pass-through" query in Access 2003, it passes a native Progress SQL statement to Progress. This works without issue. Unfortuantely, the same query used as a "native" query is Alpha5 just stalls.

          Thanks,

          Rich
