Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: A5V9 Dedicated Web Server Questions

This is a quote directly from the Alpha 5 help file in the FAQ section:

How many licenses are required for the Application Server?

The Application Server licenses are sold and installed per-server. We don't limit how may sites or applications you can host on a single server with a single license. It is quite possible to host multiple sites on a single server.

If you use one server to host multiple web sites, you only need one license.

If you use one server per web site, such as each store having the server installed locally, you would need one server license for each site.

Well, that makes sense to me. A bit inconsistent with other posts, but this one makes much more sense to me (for the reasons I outlined baove).

Wow. I had no idea I'd create this kind of flurry and interchange with my post. Thanks to all of you who contributed. It's been quite a ride to watch the thoughts develop. I have to offer a special thanks to Donald for pointing us all to the "black and white" on the license subject. That certainly makes it crystal clear.

Thanks Don for finding that. The interesting problem is that these two or three official descriptions could all be accurate, it depends on definitions. I still believe in the case I described -- some other companies application hosted on my server, even thought I wrote it -- requires a separate license.

Re: A5V9 Dedicated Web Server Questions

            Hello to all,

I just jumped in and purchased Alpha 5, with the Application Server, Run Time and several other products that were bundled together.

The license said it was "unlimited" for the Application Server. When something is advertised as unlimited, I would assume that means I could put some project on several different websites, be they hosted by a single hosting company or multiple hosting companies or even locally. Is this a correct evaluation or am I missing something?

Thanks for the research as mentioned in other posts above.

Re: A5V9 Dedicated Web Server Questions

Your App Server license is for one single server, unlimited users on that server -- this part is clear, you would not be able to register the server on multiple pieces of hardware; it would physically disallow that through the activation process.

Re: A5V9 Dedicated Web Server Questions

But, preparing for webserver implementation, we need to get a SSL certificate, so we need to decide what URL will appear in it.

I do not think that we can set more that one SSL key in A5, so, I am not an expert but I think the bottleneck is there if we want to set more than one website on the same server. And keep in mind that for the same website, it could be nice to have different niche entry websites, in order to reach a large spectrum of visitors, by a friendly focussed content for Search Engines.

                1) Anybody knows if we can register a SSL with just an IP address, not an domain name?

Also, it does not sound good to me to go live on th web with a Windows technology. So, I am planning to try the A5 webserver on FreeBSD. Not only it allows to be on a more secure OS, but that OS allows to logically 'partition' the OS to each application.

Another alternate solution, is to try Virtualization. But if we have different instances of A5 Server on it, I do not know how A5 installer will manage the Computer Name (what is checked for license right). Can we set more than one instance with the same computer name? Or, can we set more than one instance of the server with a different computer name (virtualisation), that is in fact the same hardware server? But A5 Server already starts multiple server threads, so not shure, multiple instances of it would add performance, but it could add flexibility for multiple projects on the same server.

                2) About virtualization, anybody tried it? Any real performance/security gain, or advantage for A5 server?

                3) Anybody using a PCI card implementing hardware fast encryption/decrypt and if A5 can use it?

                4) About FreeBSD, I need to learn the OS before starting my tests and I am not an expert, so, if you are interested by the info, I recently got this answer from http://www.codeweavers.com/ answering my request originally for OpenBSD.They produce a Windows emulator for Apple Mac computers (by the way, Max OS is FreeBSD based) :

"If you're interested in giving it a shot on your OpenBSD system, our FreeBSD builds are ready. Again, we're not really sure how well it will work on OpenBSD (if at all), but our devs think there's a decent chance. If you'd like to try it, all we need you to do is create an account with us. Once created, just login to your account and head to the My Downloads section of your My Account page, and look for the Unsupported Downloads tab. Within you'll find a BSD tab."

I also found another windows emulator for FreeBSD:
                http://win4bsd.com/wp/desktop/

There is also Wine (a non commercial opensource implementation, not an emulation!!! of Windows for FreeBSD), but maybe it is not fully implemented up to now.

                5) If somebody knows another emulator... or tried a virtualization software
with A4 server, let us know!
