Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5ws_get_user_values()

    I have the following function, and I am passing a valid ulink value through to the function. It works properly on the test site (localhost), but not on the live server. Any ideas why?

    Code:
    function test_user_lookup as c (calEmp as c)
        dim output as p
        dim output.controls.email.value as c
        dim request.variables.ulink as c
        request.variables.ulink = calEmp
        result = a5ws_get_user_values(output, request)
        test_user_lookup = "Email: " + output.controls.email.value
    end function

    Re: a5ws_get_user_values()

    You are not passing the request variable into the function. The system request variable must be passed to the security function when run on the server so the server can locate the security files. If the system request variable is not found, the security function will use the local profile folder, which is why it works on local host.
    Code:
    function test_user_lookup as c (calEmp as c, request as p)
    You should also use the newer security functions such as "a5ws_get_WebUser_Values()" as shown in this list in the help. Version 10 will make the request variables read only, and you won't be able to assign a value to them. The newer function allow sending user defined values to the various web security functions to get and save user values.

      Re: a5ws_get_user_values()

      Thank you Jerry.

      Someone needs to sit down and do a serious re-write of the help guide. Even the link you just gave me has errors in it. And since it has the same publish date as the file I have on my computer, why is a5ws_get_WebUser_Values() not listed in my version?

      The message board is great, but I would love to be able to rely on the help guide more. At this point, I only look at it as a means for suggesting what might work (and if not, go to the board).

        If that link has errors, please advise and we can fix them. The web help is the most current help available. The PDF and CHM download versions may not be current as they are not updated as often as the web help.

          Re: a5ws_get_user_values()

          Thank you for that clarification. I was under the assumption that they were the same since they both have a date of "March 18, 2008"

          I do like the CHM help better, though, since it does not require internet access, and it is faster. Oh, well.

          The error I found was actually trivial, but when compounded across the help guide it gets annoying (i.e., I've seen this particular mistake often).

          Under "Description" it began with:

          The A5WS_Get_User_Values() function

          Which, of course, is the wrong function name. Since at times other functions are referred to within the description of a function, this can be confusing.

          In the future, to whom should I report these errors?

              Stephen,

              At the bottom of every online help page is a hotspot called Comments.
