Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A5v9 Web Application vs Company Site

    Greetings, people.

This isn't really a techy question but it is an Alpha Web Application business concern...

I have A5v9 Platinum Web Application and am wondering how I can best utilize it. I bought the Web Application along with the Desktop and Server Applications as a bundle. I'd like to use the Web Application to serve the IS Departmental needs for troubleshooting tickets and the like.

My Company (a medical center) has its own website therefore, I don't want to step on any toes. What would be the best way to approach the Company's web developers (a third party vendor we're paying a good chunk of money to) so they won't feel threatened? Any business technique out there for such a situation?

    Jesse.

I don't see why you have to approach them at all. They are a separate company and have no hold on what you do internally. If you 'ask', of course they are going to work to diminish your potential and keep things under their control.

When you said "my company" I dont know if that means you own the company, or are an employee - the approach would depend on that. Perhaps find out if anyone in IT has asked to have this particular feature added to the website (the one you want to build). If so, find out why it has not been done - perhaps cost, time, lack of a project leader, etc. Maybe it is too costly to have the 3rd party web developer do it and Alpha can be (or perceived to be) a lower cost option. Maybe it is not a high priority for IT compared to other enhancements on the drawring table, so perhaps Alpha can be used just for this special project.

The opposition you will run in to is that Alpha will be considered non-standard compared to whatever else they are using, and you will be the only person who knows how to program the application. Those are both real business concerns.

      Steve...

Thank you, for the input. Am an employee. Not the owner. Good points.

      Thanx, again.

You need to convince your company that this Ticket Application can improve IS service within your company.
Usually a ticket Application takes care of the ITIL Incident IT business process. If this can be done for a great deal Self Service (via web input), classifies the incident (ticket) to the right IT service, can deal with prioritising, supports actions to be sent to possible incident solvers and aids in the whole audit trail process of this (preferably maintaining a knowledge base so future tickets can benefit from that) this will greatly improve efficiency and will save a lot of cost on resolution time of tickets.
If the system also approach this from a Business Process approach instead of only the IT service invloved, then your IT helpdesk has more clues how to solve the incident. Or has more easily access to which knowledge is required to solve the ticket.

Part of the convincing is that the application built with Alpha can be maintained, not only by you, but easily by somebody else. Running costs for such an application will probably be much lower then any outside service provider can offer now. Maybe that is one of the possible approaches for you. Create a good prototype, which can deal with real examples within your company. And then let this outside company come up with something as lean and mean tailored as you made it..

I am sure with Alpha you can have a very competetive application which can help your company in streamlining this (IT) process. Once you can convince that then convincing them about whether it can be maintained easy is the next hurdle to take.

Also you future web application can be easily started from the existing website (maintained by outside partly) just by linking to the start url your website will be hosted on.

In our own experience, moving as much of the web design and maintenance in-house (e.g. away from so called "design" companies that charge a fortune for adding something as trivial as a new menu item or a link on an existing page etc.) has saved us a LOT of money.

From my reading in this thread, the main issue may well be company politics, both internal and external.
Like Andrea suggests most companies can make savings by doing things with an internal IT department, and also massive productivity/ analysis and organisational gains as well. But the big thing here is, the Human resources available, not fancy hardware.
Talking from an employers perspective, I would be really happy to see an employee such as yourself come to me with a full presentation of what you propose could be achieved. Even if I disagreed with your solutions and proposals etc, at least I could see you were thinking and taking an inititive in the companies interest.
Also your alegiance belongs to your employer not to
            (a third party vendor
, however leave it up to your employer's representitive that deals with them to discuss || mention it. If you were the companys rep, then maybe you could challenge them to a RFP (request for proposal) type competition, and make them earn their money.

              Jesse,

The outside company is going to tell you that Alpha is a toy, and to do anything important, you need a much more complicated and much more expensive system.

My response would be to ask for a quote, then ask why do we need a $20,000 solution to a $5,000 problem?

Then, you are going to need references. When they say "show me something done in Alpha" you can ask for references on this message board. Here's two you can use from organizations in Seattle with people in the medical field:

The Washington State Association for Healthcare Quality: www.WSAHQ.org

and the Seattle Section of the American Society for Quality: www.ASQ-Seattle.org. The Chair works at MultiCare Health Services in Tacoma.

Both those sites are 100% Alpha and have a "contact us" page with links to people who can speak to you about Alpha. Get some quotes that support your case.

              And, good luck!

I was just thinking the same thing as Pat -- don't ask for permission! Permission is rarely granted when it is asked for ahead of time! But before you tell them it a $5,000 solution, be absolutely sure it really is; that you really can develop what you spec out.
