Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Publishing Time

Have I got something set up wrong here or is the publishing time on version 9 longer then in previous versions?
If this is the case then I think that it should come with a Health Warning as my consumption of tea and the amount of cigarettes that I am getting through waiting for something to happen is horrendous. Just to publish the smallest of files can take 2 3 minutes, add this up when trying to get something to work correctly, before you know where you are, a couple of hours have passed. I would not call this a rapid development system.
I did read a thread a couple of weeks ago about the number of files that are being published each time, is this what is happening, if so WHY
If this is a genuine problem and not just me, then would it not be a good idea to start complaining.

    Re: Publishing Time

The problem of it uploading dozens of non-requested files when you ask it to upload only one, has been around for a long time. My understanding is that Alpha will be providing a remedy for this shortly. So if your uploads recently are slower, maybe you've added resources to the files you are attempting to upload. For instance, if you upload an A5W page that has NO components, it would upload faster than a page with one or more Grids, because Alpha uploads all of the Grids AND their full set of CSS files. So if each of your Grids had a different style sheet, then each full set of CSS files would upload for each style sheet. That can easily run in to dozens of files per request. Nearly 100 in some of my tests.

      Hi Steve

Do I understand that you have the same problem?
Have just done a test, after doing a complete publish of all files I created a A5W Page with absolutely nothing in it and did another publish on just that file, tick the Publish New and Modified Files Only and it took 3 minutes 15 seconds to come up with Checking for Previously Published Files, then another 3 minutes 10 seconds to actually publish the files. I then did another Publish on the same file, but this time unchecking the Publish new and Modified Files Only and it took 2 minutes 45 seconds to get to the publish procedure, which is about the same amount of time it takes to publish a file with grids in.
So I do sincerely hope that Alpha has got this on their TO DO list because I just do not have the time to sit around waiting for something to happen, I'm sure that you agree.

        Re: Publishing Time

The whole History thing is useless as far as I am concerned. I never rely on what is supposedly in history. I alternate between server and localhost, so history is never accurate for a given target. But besides that, everything you discovered. History has no practical value to a developer because I need to know absolutely that what I asked to be published was in fact published. If you rely on history, you never know if it is or is not going to publish the file you just asked to publish.

In practical terms, you tweak and publish, tweak and publish, tweak and publish. And History doesn't always reflect that you tweaked.

What I do - I publish and then click Cancel just after it published the file I want. I always wait for it to get past the security, which comes first, and click Cancel while it is uploading some insignificant graphic image. That saves me 3 minutes per publish instance. I publish 100 times on a good day.

          Re: Publishing Time

          Hi Steve

I only gave the example of the check and uncheck Publish New and Modified Files Only to compare the time involved, yes I always UNCHECK the Publish New and Modified Files Only as that is the shortest route to completion. The actual box that appears when publishing the files is not the problem as it completes in a few seconds, which is what I would expect, its the time involed getting to that part of the publishing procedure, what is happening in the background? especially when, as in my test, there was very little to do, create a new file with a half a dozen lines of html code in it. I have just gone back to version 8 and complete the same test and it takes approx. 35 seconds to do the same thing. VERY STRANGE

Has anyone else got this problem, please let us know.
