Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Problem with localhost showing pages

I'll have to watch the video. I expirement all the time; its a very important part of learning and discovery; but it can also drive one crazy. Edison didn't have the advantage of an experienced 'user base'.

I attached a few screenshots. For starting off, your screens should look exactly like these. Include turning off Security Framework as shown on the second image. Your values may be slightly different where I have marked in orange. To clarify, the first two are screenshots from the LOCAL App Server, at Control Panel > Tools > Application Server.

That plus what Dan said about URL, etc.

    I'm on XP SP3.

Re: Problem with localhost showing pages

      Hi Dan,

I reset the server name to the machine name. The webroot remained as suggested throughout all testing. Disengaged the license.

Set up 1 profile to save to "local" with a target directory under webroot called test.

Published using this profile. Started fresh instance of firefox.

In theory, as you suggested, the url should be http://localhost/test/index.a5w.

      That simply does not work.

Let me ask something else. Before I installed this version of Alpha, I installed another Version 8, purchased through a third party. Then Alpha Software sent an email about this version I purchases - the all in one. I uninstalled version 8 but the question now becomes, did the unwise software wisely update the register or do I have to go into the registry and eliminate version 8 references. Might that be the problem? Just wondering.

        Hi Wayne,

A5v8 shouldn't matter one way or the other. On my machine I have A5 v5, v6, v7, v8 and v9 all working fine.

Just the fact that you have to type in the IP address for you page to work makes me think something is just not correct with a setting on your machine. Or....Are you trying to publish to another machine on an internal network?

Re: Problem with localhost showing pages

Vista commonly has problems resolving "localhost" to 127.0.0.1. You can address this by modifying your HOSTS file to ensure it has a localhost entry.

            Lenny,

Bravo! Your lead helped provide the answer!

For all those that have followed this thread and experienced the same, you'll be happy to know that there really is a solution. The problem was not with Alpha 5 but the way Vista resolves localhost. Here is a brief rundown:

            Open c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then open the file hosts using notepad.
After the last comment line shown by # drop down a line and add:

            127.0.0.1 localhost

The next line (if there) should be
            ::1 localhost

            save the file.

            close alpha and restart it.

This should solve the problem. Special thanks to Beverly88 who discovered the answer.

As a note, I have a couple of vista systems. One of them didn't have a problem with localhost, ever. The one I installed Alpha 5 on had only part of the file (::1 etc) but didn't have the 127....

I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions and concerns. Every single problem and test that I did and placed in response to others suggestions has now been resolved.

            Let productivity begin....

            Sincerely,
            Wayne

Re: Problem with localhost showing pages

I don't think the connection interrupted message is directly related to Alpha5...

Several posts show up when searching for
              "Connection interrupted" browser
on Google, and most are FireFox/Mozilla problems.

Thanks ya'll for tracking that down. I've been living without my localhost for a couple months now, too busy to find the solution.

Re: Problem with localhost showing pages

Glad to hear it helped some folks. However, be aware that you must run vista with UAC (User Account Control) turned off. Maybe tech support can address why this is so(?).

I ran into the user permissions problem too, but found I could right-click on the file, select Properties, and give myself permission on the spot.

Everyone's configuration and rights may, of course, vary.

Re: Problem with localhost showing pages

The UAC is altered in Control Panel. In explorer you'll see Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts. At the bottom of that window you'll see "Turn User Account Control on or off."

I believe this is different than setting permissions for directories, which is apparently what Steve and I did.

One of the resources people might like to look at is http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...20control&ac=1 and of particular interest, people might like to look at this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922708.

                          Wayne,

I had this problem with V9. Now I installed V10 Trial version and the same happens to me. I changed the hosts file, but without success.
In short: When I start up A5V10 I get a window telling me that a web page could not show. When I publish to local, I see nothing unless I manually change localhost into 127.0.0.1.

This thread stops here, I cannot find any information on this subject related to V10. Can you help me here?

                          Thanks,
