Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can we do this with this Product

I recently purchased your alpha 5 v9 Platinum package with the application server.
I have been diligently going through the Web Application Made Easy manual.
The product looks like it might be able to do what we need.

The reason were looking at Alpha is that currently, we have a desktop application for Used Car Dealers written in Visual FoxPro with Promatrix RAD tool, and we are looking to re-write the application and port it to the web.

Our new product/service will be sold by subscription, paid monthly/quarterly.
We have to be able to accommodate 200 to 300 users, perhaps more.
We need to segregate each user with their own unique and secure data folder.

I appreciate we have to purchase the full server software but the package we purchased should get us started.

We need to know if its possible to do what we envision using Alpha products.

Also, do we need a Windows box or can we use Linux/Unix.

    Thanks for the information

    Hi Joe -

Several of us have used A5 for car dealer-related apps. You don't specify the kinds of features or operations you want to provide via A5, but I can bet you can do 'em. If you have specific questions, I or others will be glad to respond.

Seperating the data is no big deal. You'll find various discussions about approaches and models using the "Search" feature of this board.

And, the A5 Web App Server works with Windows, not with Linux.

As Steve says, there are several of these out there with different features and capabilities.

      Here's one on the web.

Re: Can we do this with this Product

        Thanks Steve,

What we currently have and need to replicate is what's in our current desktop application.
What we do is keep track of all Contacts - both Customers & Suppliers
We keep track of Inventory(Vehicles) and expenses assigned to each vehicle.
We produce Retail Bill of Sale plus Wholesale Buy or Sell bills of sale.
        Reports galore.
I can see that A5 has security which is very important. We need to stop someone from seeing certain items based on groups. i.e. Vehicle Cost, expenses & Profit...

I'm going to keep on going through the Tutorial and then will try to do a beginning to the application and see where I go from there.
My main concern is that we can keep the data in separate folders etc...

          Sounds do-able.

My largest/oldest app is an auto leasing company. They've had a desktop system in A5 since 1988 (and lots using the DOS version Alpha Four before that), and we've moved various pieces to the web to meet their customers' needs, including fleet management, online leasing forms, etc. etc.

I understand your desire for seperate data folders. And you can do that, of course. But a drawback would be the replication of work if you add or change, say, a report. I'd consider putting it all in one folder and using the security functions to sort it out. Not recommending, just chewing it over here.

If you do go the seperate folder route then I'd spend some time seeing what you can do to keep repetitive/replicative work to a minimum. Using things like the [pathalias.adb_path] or other aliases might save a lot of time.

            Pat,

FYI: the link doesn't work - at least at this moment in time.

              Peter,

              Thanks for the "heads up".

They say timing is everything, and I picked the time to post the link just as the site is being moved to a new node at ZebraHost! So the new ip is still being propogated!

Anyway, it looks like Joe wants a Dealer management app, not an on-line inventory app, so my example probably isn't applicable anyway.

Yeah, but we love to see other people's applications - esp. seasoned web developers such as yourself. It inspires the rest of us!
