Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What version of MYSQL should I use....

What version of MYSQL should I use for Apha5V9P and WebApps. There is MySQL (GA), and there is MySQL Enterprise. If you going to use Alpha5V9P for a business solution, is it a requirement to use Enterprise. Is everyone using Windows XP and MySQL or are there others using Linux, Apache, and MySQL. ** I want to get started installing and using Alpha5 **

Using MySQL in a GA or Enterprise is that you have a paid service for updates from SUN. What we have at the office is Version 5.1 DB 400GB in a master - slave on a HP SAN MVA 2000 running on Redhat 5 Enterprise. Yearly cost 4000 Euro.
So it depands on you business and you demands on uptime and performance.
On small business MySQL non commercial version is oke i think if you always use a stable version.
Not sure or you will find a hosting provider that support master-slave or GA ask the forum for that. If you have more questions you can mail me.

    cheers,

    Eric

Thank you Eric, I am building a new system to use for the Alpha5V9P I just purchased. I am totally new to Alpha and plan on reading all of the PDF's I received in the bundle. To get my feet wet I will go with MySQL (GA) currently released Cluster v7.0 on a Windows XP OS. Ultimately I want to have Linux OS but I have no knowledge of Linux at this time. Joe

        Hi Joe,

Just a FYI--Alpha works with Windows but generally can connect to other dbs wherever they may be located....so long as the Alpha program is on a Windows PC you should be fine (IOW not a Linux, Mac, or ...).

So you can install and use mysql on a Windows platform and move your database to Linux in the future, good luck with the job.

              Joe,

The Windows version of MySQL and the Linux version have some different requirements regarding case sensitivity due to the underlying OS, so be sure to check that before building in Windows. You might build an app in Windows that won't work in Linux without some changes.

If you build to the Linux requirements in Windows, then it will work in both OS.

For some reason I had trouble getting mySQL to run on a Windows server, this may be due to me having accessed the server through remote desktop though. I have a Linux mySQL DB running but back up regularly and can use a Windows one on my PC as a backup if the main server goes down.

Re: What version of MYSQL should I use....

I'm not an expert...I've only been using MySQL for only about a year.

In my case, I'm using MySQL for development on a ZebraHost VPS, 1 gig of memory, and have no trouble running MySQL, Alpha V9 and the Web Server all on the same machine at the same time. I'm doing the development on-line. It uses Windows Server 2003.

I installed the community (read free) version of 5.1 (MySQL has different install versions for Windows and Linux, so you have to pick the right one) along with the tools. Tools are listed as 5.0, but seem to work fine with 5.1. The Query Browser tool is indespensible!

If you are nervous about the install, Clive will do it for you!

My intent is to move the current apps (there are three of them) to dedicated servers with the enterprise version when development is complete in the hope that they will make enough money to pay for themselves (and maybe a little extra for me!)

My production computer is running MySQL on Centos Linux; I do development work on a PC running Windows XP and MySQL; and I have slave databases running MySQL on Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux. MySQL runs well on all of them but the only one supporting multiple users is the Centos Linux box. I like the fact that I can set up the Linux machines, take away the keyboard and monitor, and leave them alone for months to years at a time.

Sorry but you got me chuckling. Early this year I visited a friend who had about 10 machines running in a rack. He was busy trying to work out what one of them was there for. He new it was important, but couldn't remember why. :-) We left it alone in the end - if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Anyhow I suggest labeling your Linux boxes. :-)
