Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Questions on web page

    I'm doing my first page and need some information.

    I have 3 different questions to solve before I can forge forward.

    In the presave I need to read the lastnumber table and get the last stock_no and increment it by one and write it to stock_no field and write the new stock_no back to the file.

    I also have to validate the Serial Number(VIN) to ensure that it's a valid entry.
    If it's not a valid number, I need to tell the user this and return the focus to the VIN field.
    I have the formula in my VFP/VPM program desktop program. Currently I call a function from the LostFocus of the field.
    Now I need to be able to do this in the form.
    Would I use the validate of the field or is there somewhere else I can call a function?
    BTW, I need to be able to open and read a table (carvin) that has a value for each letter in the VIN.

    I'm using tab panels for the form. I've used 3 columns. Is there a way to rearrange the fields so I can have the fields look better.

    On 1 tab, I have 2 memo fields. I've set the fields to textarea. I need to make the field area larger. I haven't figured out how to do this. Attached is a jpg.

    Thanks

    Joe

    Re: Questions on web page

    All of this will be possible in a Dialog rather than a Grid, like you have in your attached image.

    In the Dialog, you use the Validate event to test the validity of your VIN number using xbasic, and it will return the user to the entry screen if it does not pass.

    The increment number can happen in the AfterValidate event. Here you would use xbasic to open, increment, and assign that number. In the same area you would continue to add a record to your table based on their data entry.

    You modify the dimensions of a textArea field with the rows and columns settings in properties for that field.

    These are some incomplete answers for now, but I think you need to review how Dialogs function before you move forward.

      Steve,
      Thanks for the reply.
      I've looked at the Dialog which will probably do everything I need.
      I've also reviewed the video that I received with the order and it looks to me, correct me if I'm wrong, that with a Dialog, all the fields has to be hard coded.
      I''m going to work some on Dialog in the next few days and see where this takes me.

        Re: Questions on web page

        Hi,
        From the screenshot you are only using [ADD] on this Grid,
        Thus the 'Hard Coding' isn't that difficult,
        The grid component beats the Dialog component with
        Batch - Entry, Multi Mods, Search, and Linkages etc.
        With simple data entry, the dialog seems quite often used around here for simple data entry.
        Typically the code you'll need in the after Validate will look something like,

        Code:
        dim newtbl as P
        newtbl = table.open("c:\a5\thejob\Notes.dbf")

        newtbl.enter_begin()
            newtbl.Description = CurrentForm.Controls.Description.value
            newtbl.GeneralNotes = CurrentForm.Controls.GeneralNotes.value
        newtbl.enter_end(.T.)

        newtbl.close()
        note: Code not tested,
        But as you can see the code isn't too complex
