Text Formatting in Freeform Grid

Hi,

I am passing a session variable from a grid to another grid. The session variable is created in the original grid. I have a freeform text field in the target grid and have entered the following code;

<%a5 session.vInt_Desc = lookup("[PathAlias.ADB_path]\tbl_obj_int_link","Link_id="+quote(session.link_ID),"Int_desc")
? session.vInt_Desc %>

The text in the original grid field is formatted with carriage returns, but when i display the target grid using the code above, all the formatting is ignored and you get one string of text.

Does anyone know a way i could maintain the formatting in the target freeform grid field?

You need to tell the browser how to handle it. Browsers don't know about carriage returns/line feeds (crlf). I use something that Alpha examples use.

Place this function ate the end of your page (after an END statement):

function jsEscape as c (txt as c)
    jsEscape = stritran(txt,"'","\'")
    jsEscape = stritran(jsEscape,crlf(),"\n")
end function

The call that function within your print (?) command:

? jsEscape(session.vInt_Desc)

I also recommend using "s_quote" over "quote" because you can use it across data types (i.e., it will quote text as text, date as date, etc.)

Does this code need to go onto the .a5w page or grid component page. Can you be specific on exactly where in the page this should go please.

Should my calling code look like this?

One step forward, i feel we are getting close to achieving this.

Or add HTML to your original text. To make paragraphs line break, you can either add <br><br> to the end of each paragraph, or bound each paragraph with <p>...</p>.

The text is created within a grid memo field. How would I use the html tags to view the unknown text.with the correct formatting.

You would alter the text right in the memo field, adding <p>...</p> around each paragraph, or adding "<br>" to the end of any paragraph. You can manually enter this in the memo field or search this forum for HTML Editor and use that freeware from my website. Just like on this forum, we type our messages in an HTML Editor so the text has proper HTML.

Or you can use what Stephen proposed (with slight modification) to handle just paragraph returns. The modification you need is to replace the "\n" in the script with "<br>". The "\n" will just add "\n" to your text.

Or you can do it this way since you only care about returns:

txt = lookup("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\mytable",".t.","myMemo")
txt = stritran(txt,crlf(),"<br>")
?txt
