Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ui_dlg_box on the web

I am working on a freeform template in a grid and used the xdialog genie. The code generated uses a ui_dlg_box. When I checked out the help it says that this is only for desktop application!
Am I wasting my time with this genie or is the help wrong?
Anyone got any experience of this?

Xdialog does not work on the web, so yes it's a bug in the genie.

You're correct. You can't use the ui_dlg_box() or other ui_* functions on a web page.

If you're having a problem figuring out how to do what you need, just 'splain a bit...

I'll gently disagree with Andrea here - not a bug in the genie. It's just that you don't use that tool. Just like you don't use a saw to drive a nail.

Admittedly I did not check this particular case, but I had noticed in the past that sometimes you can use a genie for things in the web page tool, and it does not produce code for web but for desktop.

I just looked and there is NO xdialog genie anywhere in the Freeform section of a grid. The closest you can come is if you open Freeform, open HTML Editor and then insert an A5W block, and in that block select to add a Function, and select a UI_ function from the list.

Paul, are you referring to something else?

Thanks for all the replies. I'll try another way! I was just trying to add a customer email feedback to a page containing a grid and using the genie seemed to be the logical way to build the code.

As far as using the genie in a freeform, I looked up how to create tempoary variables in a freeform template and it talked about using the xbasic tab.

While I was in the xbasic area of the freeform I right clicked the code and it allowed me to use a genie. I thought because it allowed me to use the genie that it worked!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I'll do a little research and see which bits work and which bits don't.

I've just reread that last statement and it sounds like I'm not a fan of Alpha but nothing could be more wrong, I think it is a superb piece of software, but it is still a work in progress.
