Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter a report using a session protected variable

    How can I filter a report using a session protected variable?
    I have tried using the genie but I must be missing something.
    I use the __Protected__Userid format and assign the user a client ID of say 44. Then when the user signs in I want them to print a report filtered to thier client ID of 44.

    Please help !!!!

    Thank you so much for your time.

    Re: Filter a report using a session protected variable

    You need to use a global variable, something like:

    dim global yourvar as c = what_ever_variable

    and then use the what_ever_variable in the report.

      Re: Filter a report using a session protected variable

      If you are using the security framework to assign the __protected__UserId or are assigning it in a link, then it is probably being assigned as a type character. So, if the client id in the table is actually numeric, then you will have to convert the session variable from character to numeric to create the filter.

        Thank you but being new to this I do not know where to put the dim statement. Do I put it in the after validate area? Do I use the __Protected__Userid as the variable?

          Re: Filter a report using a session protected variable

          If you are doing this from a dialog, then put the code in the AfterValidate event, the sample place that you would put the code to run the report.

            But then do you need to filter the report itself? I tried all of this and it does not work.

              Re: Filter a report using a session protected variable

              Reed,

              Here is an example. You would put something like this in the AfterValidate event:

              Dim global starting_patient as C = patient1
              Dim global ending_patient as C = patient2

              dim filter as c
              dim order as c
              Filter = ".T."
              Order = ""
              Dim filename as c
              filename = session.session_folder + "tempreport.pdf"
              filename = report.saveas("Patient_List@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\patients.ddd","pdf",filter,order,filename,.f.)
              if file.exists(filename)
              currentform.RedirectTarget = session.session_url + "tempreport.pdf?" + time("hms3")
              end if

              Then in the report itself, you would put something like this in the Reports Detail Properties, filter expression:

              between(Patients->patient,starting_patient,ending_patient)

              I hope this helps.

                Thank you Gary but how does that relate to my question? I need to take the __Protected__Ulink and filter a report with it.

                  Just define an argument as using a session variable as the source, and ensure that in the page the user is redirected to after login, the session variable is set.

                      Oops. Sorry! From where are you trying to run this report? Grid, Dialog, a5w page? You can always create a dummy dialog with a field of the same data type as your session variable. Then use the print report genie in the aftervalidate event to generate the xbasic code and copy it into wherever you need it. Just swap the Variable name for session.__protected_etc

                          Just answer the question I asked as it makes a huge difference: where do you want to run this report from on your site?
