Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem Changing Password on Login Component

I am a newbie working my way through Susan Bush's Book Alpha Five Web Applications Made Easy, The Basics and More for V8 & V9 Platinum

My problem is that when I attempt to change a password on the Login Web Component, I get the following error message when I click the "CHANGE" Button:

"Welcome to ABC Seminars. Please login. Ln: 432 Access is denied. c:\chgpass.txt" (Page 82 of the Text)

I'm using Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 Laptop.

Has anyone else had this problem? All other functions of the Login Web Component appear to function correctly.

Is this a problem with the Web Component or my machine.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanx in advance.

    Cliff M.

Re: Problem Changing Password on Login Component

Welcome to Alpha Five. I don't have that instruction guide, but something about your error message makes no sense. There would be no reason for any function to reference a text file on your server, let alone on your c: drive. Likely Vista is not allowing interaction with a file on that root drive for valid security reasons.

What are the instructions? Is this using a sample application provided with the book?

Re: Problem Changing Password on Login Component

Yes Steve, I'm using a sample that was provided in the book.

Basically we are instructed to create a Main Menu Page that has a link to the secured Database Grid requiring a Login. The Login Web Component has a Change Password Button that when clicked opens up a new Web Component that requires the Old Password, the new password, and new password confirmation before clicking the "CHANGE" button. The error is returned upon clicking the change button.

But after I submitted the question, I found a thread at the bottom of the screen that described the the same problem. The responder (I believe an employee of Alpha5) said that it was a bug in the program that would be fixed in the next build. I downloaded & installed the latest update, but it is the same build number. Any idea when the next build will be released?

      Thanx for your prompt response.

      Cliff

The bug must be that some test code was left in. Still cannot imagine any security process requiring access to any text file. I would go to that older thread and just add a reminder/question. That will prompt Jerry and you can determine if the fix was made.

Re: Problem Changing Password on Login Component

The last build without the error was build 1997. You could roll back to that build if you are running Vista and it is causing a problem. The bug was caused by some test code that inadvertently was added and wasn't found until after the latest build (2095) was released. There currently is no release date for the next update build.

Now that I know where the problem lies, I can work around it until the new build is released.

            Thanx Jerry & Steve.

Re: Problem Changing Password on Login Component

I'd never use that feature to change password anyway. It means anyone with my password could change it and lock me out. I'd prefer a method that sends an email to me, telling me someone wants to change my password and requires me to click an embedded hyperlink that resets the password if clicked within a short period of time. That way I know what's going on and you can keep a log of the entire transaction in case it comes back to bite you.

Never assume the person attempting to log in is the legitimate user.

Thanx Steve, I was kind of thinking along the same lines.

I was just attempting to follow the text to get a feel for the program.

                Thanx again.
