Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is this the same project as the one you mention here? http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=79790

If yes then there is something seriously odd going on with that project

This particular issue is happening in two different projects on two different systems. But on the system .FPT bloating issue you pointed to that I also posted is happening on one of the same projects above.

So the quick answer is that yes the two are happening together but only in one project. The other project does not have reports or letters though.

As I said before I have *never* come across a situation where editing even large projects just makes layouts or components disappear. Having contents of an a5w page erased because of problems with WYSIWYG, yes, but never actually having whole components physically vanish from the project.

From some of your other posts it sounds like you have been having problems sorting out where files need to go, and possibly moving files around and physically copying things to the server instead of publishing. I know originally when I started out, I got confused over this sort of thing and ended up wrecking a few test projects that way (although usually just by replacing dev versions of reports with the published version so losing my changes etc.).

It almost sounds like your system is reverting to a backed-up copy of your file system whenever it gets a bit overwhelmed, which seems unusual, like the main "index" .alb or whatever file of your project keeps getting overwritten by the old version regularly etc?

When you say these items vanish, is this something that happens the next time you open the project (in which case there may be a split between files kept locally and some files stored on another PC/server, and the "remote" files are not picked up?), or do they just spontaneously vanish while you still have the project open?

Backing up the whole project regularly, especially after big changes, is vital anyway but in cases where you know your system is experiencing unpredictable fluctuations it is especially crucial.

Thanks, in my ranting I may have led you to believe I have different files disappearing. The only files disappearing are reports and letters. And yes they disappear from the control panel not as a result of exiting Alpha5. That has not occurred again but did twice for a letter and once for a report. I also commented that this was similar to issues prevalent back in V7 when web components mysteriously started disappearing from the web projects control panel. I said that because a .a5w page I had been editing xbasic and JScript code on for printing reports suddenly scrambled into mush before my very eyes. Web components were still intact but not embedded in the .a5w page anymore because the code was simply gone. This has not happened again yet. But it happened at a time when I had spent several hours of editing. I only wanted to restore the backup of this .a5w page but each time I did it would corrupt. Making it over from scratch was the only cure it seems.

Have you been trying to move or copy database files to or from your server, or are you talking about your local files only? I know I had SOME weird stuff happening when I first tried to play with the location of the files, or add remote files to a local database etc.
