Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    PDF printing error on VPS

I've read around and I cant quite seem to find a fix for this thats like my problem, if I've missed it please feel free to point me in the right direction.

I am running Alpha V on a desktop and using the application server only on a VPS (yes I have a license). I have set up a report dialog but when I go to print it I get the "Errors in: event.AfterValidate code:
'Alpha Five Printer' (for creating PDF, RTF and HTML output) is not installed. Re-install Alpha Five Application Server"

I've seen in some posts where instructions have been given to go to the printer control in the windows server and change ports etc...my problem is when I go to control panel-printers there are none there to change anything on (and it wont let me add one)

Can anyone advise what I need to do to get the pdf to print to the browser thru the VPS?

well if no one has an answer, does anyone at least know if when I installed the web application server on my VPS if it should have installed an Alpha printer?

'Alpha Five Printer' (for creating PDF, RTF and HTML output) is not installed. Re-install Alpha Five Application Server"
I would suggest to do as the error message instructs you to. Attempt to re-install Alpha Five Application server.

Since the error message indicates the resolution is to re-install I would assume that the installation should have created the printers for you.

If you can't add a printer in the printer control panel applet, I would verify that the print spooler service is running and that you have the necessary rights to add printers.

            Shannon,
The Alpha5 printer is basically just used by Alpha internally....IOW there is nothing to be configured or chosen....once installed Alpha will use it for its purposes. Leave whatever printer you normally have as default as default.

But that is the problem....its set up on a VPS, I dont have a 'Regular" printer...it installed the alpha five printer and set it to com 1 and of course I get an error when I try to tell the browser to produce the report I have formated.

I found instructions here somewhere on here about setting it to the local port and it "kind of" works now...but now I'm down to trying to get another problem solved, that I made another thread about....getting the report to only show the queried information, not everything in the database.

Re: PDF printing error on VPS

I do believe you HAVE to have a printer installed to print....Alpha's printer driver is, as I stated, used internally and is not like other printer drivers....could be wrong but seem to remember this is the case from reading several posts on this. Setting it to a specific port does not sound correct either.

LATER EDIT: just "printing" to pdf....hmmmm. would think having just the Alpha driver would work...but not if you changed how Alpha set it up/configured it.

Re: PDF printing error on VPS

I KNOW this is going to make me sound dense, but please understand I am SO new to all of this. Why would I want/need a printer set up on my VPS? its not something I use to actually print anything, its strictly to have a web presence and use the Alpha 5 application server

                  Am I missing something?

***note to Mike's edit...I can def say that when the application server installed the Alpha "printer" it automatically set it on com 1, which is definitely not going to let it work.

Do I need to have adobe installed on the VPS to make it work?

My first question would be...Is the machine you are doing the hosting a 64bit machine?

If so, then you need to some work to "fix" the Alpha Five driver. The 'fix' is simple and quick.

Thanks to jkletrovets for providing the answer for 64 bit machines.

Here is a solution I just found on the Amyuni Forum and IT WORKED!!!!! I can now print to PDF files using Alpha5 Version 9 on my Vista 64 Bit machine.

I modified it slightly to pertain to Alpha from what was on their forum.

                      1) Make sure that you are logged in as a user with administrator rights.
                      2) Select Control Panel, and click Printers.
                      3) Right-click the Alpha Five Printer icon
                      4) Select the Ports tab, then click the Add Port... button.
                      5) Select Local Port and click the New Port... button.
                      6) Enter NUL: for the new port name and click OK. Close the Printer Ports window.
                      7) Ensure that the NUL: port is selected in the Ports list.
                      8) Select the Advanced tab.
                      9) Select the Spool print documents radio button to make the options below it clickable.
                      10) Clear (uncheck) the box labeled Enable advanced printing features.
                      11) Select the Print directly to printer radio button again.
                      12) Click the Apply button, and then click OK.

Mike, thats what I was referring to in the previous post when I said I'd found something about the local port

I *think* it work, my problem now is in the report itself (made a thread about it) in that I cant get it to just print specific records, and (Im pretty sure this is in my formatting of the report, but Im not sure) that when I tell it to print the report I get an error on my vps machine telling me the margins are out and what do I want to do...def gotta fix that but like I said, thats probably in formatting?
