Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple WAS Server

Hi everyone I am curious to know if this is possible.

I have 2 WAN connections at my location can I install WAS on 2 different machines and have them both work off of the same data folder?

This way I would have 2 different ways to access my webpage if one of my services or servers were down.

I would obviously have to have 2 Different WAS licences and have to bridge connections to my data server.

    Thanks

I think this is a great question and will be very interested in an answer as well.

      Re: Multiple WAS Server

I have something simialr working with two instances and licenses on the same server.

You should be able to map the web root to a shared drive somewhere, and ensure the data folders are defined to use the same shared data folders (although this should be safer with SQL instead of DBF files, there may be some data file access problems and file lock issues?).

The only thing you may have to be careful with is session IDs, which are unique per server instance so there might be clashes as a result.

We should also prod Alpha as this would be a good thing to add to the App Server directly. It should have the ability to load balance, use multiple servers, etc.

I thought they were developing something like this anyway (this was mentioned around the time v9 was released) but perhaps they are saving it for v10 now?

            Re: Multiple WAS Server

My memory is a bit foggy, but I once saw a proposal for an Alpha "cluster controller" where one copy of Alpha controls a cluster of servers which could be set for fail over.

It wasn't a product, just a proposal. In that case, however, it did not provide for multiple copies of Alpha that could interact and take over for each other if one instance failed. I haven't heard of Alpha having or working on such a product.

Interesting discussion. Yup, at some point we'll need to deal with clustering servers.

I've lost interest in following up on this. I used to be in communication with them on this "cluster server", but have not heard anything about it for a year.

Same here although I suspect some of the improvements in the WAS mentioned in the most recent Email Newsletter (does anyone have the online link for this?) may have done away with the need for part of this anyway.

Plus I must say I had noticed some .dll files with the word "apache" in them in the Beta builds... hmm...

                    Re: Multiple WAS Server

Thanks, to all that have viewed and given input on this thread.
I think that a multiple server is essential to the growth of Alpha's WAS.
I will be testing this in the future and will post any of my results for all to see.
I will be running sql for data and probably two different machines with WAS on them.

                      Chad,
What you suggest in your initial Post,
I have 2 WAN connections at my location can I install WAS on 2 different machines and have them both work off of the same data folder?

I'm sure must be possible, with some tinkering. What I believe would make this slightly easier is TWO separate static IP addresses [but not essential]
The "cluster controller" issue is slightly different and for a different purpose.
