Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

security / userID management for e-comm app

    Hi...

    Environment = alphasportswebv8.adb in Alpha5 v9

    ISSUE #1
When I pre-load multiple userID's in to the internal_users table of the app in Control Panel and then import them in to Web Security utility in the Web Projects Control Panel then pre-loaded users are not recognized when they attempt to log-in to the web app.

    ISSUE #2
When I load the userID information manually via the Admin interface in the private portion of the app, with an Admin ID supplied by Alpha5, I can successfully add users one at a time. This is slow. I want to pre-load over 200 users.

    ISSUE #3
Any user ID that I attempt to load via the Web Security utility gets tagged as “already used” or “active” even though it cannot be found in any table or I manually removed it from all know tables. In other words, I have to make up a bogus email address (i.e., UserID) to load users via the Admin interface. I need these “active” flags removed or something because I must use the correct UserID for the 200 users I want to import.

Fortunately, I discovered this after only uploading two test users in preparation for loading 200.

Additionally, I have publised everything possible (several times).

    Any and All help appreciated!!!

    John,

not to worry. You can delete the webuser files on your local machine, then if you open the security configuration page, they will be recreated.

Of course, you will also lose any users that are good, but I get the impression that this is just a few.

Once you finish the import, then you can republish the security files to update the users on the server.

There is an option on the web security users and groups to import your users from a table. So add your 200 to a table with id, email, password, etc. and import.

        Thanks Steve!
I used this feature to create my two test accounts.

Let me describe Issue #1 another way. I created a userID called [email protected] within Control Panel and imported via the "import" utility. I then attempted to log in and I could not.

When I viewed the user within the Admin utility, Jack was there but missing data (such as "verify password" that I was not able to load in the table. I then tried to correct the problem and save the record, but the system said [email protected] already existed and I could not continue. So, while in the admin area, I created [email protected] and the record was added without a problem.

I am thinking now that maybe I didn't mapped all the fields correctly. I will have to retry, but after deleting webuser file.

Pat...what exactly does the webuser file look like? At the moment I use [email protected] with admin access to enter the web apps. Will he go away if I delete this file?

Re: security / userID management for e-comm app

I think for a moment you should forget that you have an actual application, the e-commerce app in this case. Take a step back and ignore the application for now. The general process (in the absence of a web app) is:

            - Add users and groups via the Web Apps Control Panel > Web Security > Users and Groups.
            - The next step, which I don't think you are doing, is to PUBLISH your users and groups to the web app. That is true even if your location is on the local host.
            - Then, because you did not use a web-based utility, you need to go to the internal users database (not sure what that is for the e-commerce app) and also add that person in.

There are THREE copies of the user record in every web app: 1) the Users and Groups dialog, 2) the published copy of that list and 3) the local users table. The tables for item number 2 are hidden from you (in plain sight in the document root).

Steve, when I publish, I publish all the stuff possible via the "publish button". I have selected publish from the security control panel, but I have never done both at the same time. I am under the impression I don't need to execute two publish events.

              Should I do two publishes?

Then I don't know. Problem is that few have seen the "Admin" feature of the e-commerce app. I know the list of users is pulled directly from the Security table. I know positively that if you load your users in the Users and Groups dialog, assign a security group, and publish users and groups, that those individuals will have login rights.

Publishing can be confusing. You can easily NOT publish users and groups when you publish from the Publish icon. If I know my local Users and Groups is what I want in the web app, I always go to Web Security > Publish > and pub users and groups while also unchecking that publish new only box.

                  If interested, go to http://65.75.241.248:8080/alphasportsweb/index.a5w

This is my live test server

                  Login as [email protected]
                  password = password

Once you login, you will have access to a menu option called "admin index" located under the "your account" menu option.

When you review lenny's detail versus the last two records entered "jack and john" note how they are different.

It seems that alpha9's security is not updating sportswebV8's "mystery" internal user data table.

Worked for me. I logged in as Jerry, created a brand new account for myself, logged in as that new account and saw all of my recorded information. Then I bought that hat.

Exactly...it works great when you add from the UI one at a time.
If I try to add from Alpha5, the fields don't seem to make it in to the web UI DB. Review the detail for Jack (last record or two). His stuff is missing and he was added via Alpha5 and then published.

                      ??

I can't find Jack (no pun intended, I can't find him)

But it doesn't matter. I fired up my copy and added someone via Users and Groups. I knew already that process would not add them to any local users table, it only adds them to the security table, so they won't show up on your list if that's all you do.

You simply need to bulk add your users to BOTH tables. Add or import to Users and groups and publish. Then add them to the Internal_users (or external_users, I don't know which one). Ensure that last field in the security, the ULINK, is the same in both tables.

Thanks so much for taking the time to fire the app up on your system!

                          Question...
                          What are the two tables?
I have and understand the internal_users table, but I don't have a anything called "local users". I do have a export_users table.

Here are the tables I have.

I guess its just internal_users. I don't want to pretend I know anything about this application. I've only opened it a few times to browse around. Looks like shoppers go in the Customer table. I assume they get there by signing up online. So, internal_users and Customers, because they can log in, are all in the security table also. I see both tables have a Password field. Can't guess how that works since any current Alpha application would never keep the password in any table other than the official security table, which is not in your list of tables.

Unless there is a good help guide, you kinda have to work through it.
