Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Search Expression

    Hello,

I'm using an updatable Grid with a "Search" Part.

I've got the search part working being able to "filter" down records using checkboxes to filter for items that are true (binary fields).

I'd like the ability to search for FALSE items, or BLANK fields, i.e. only show fields that are empty, so that the user can isolate them.

Currently I have a field called "Region", and I'd like a checkbox (or anything else you recommend) in the search part to display ONLY records where region is blank.

I've created a field in the search part with "Region", and has a dropdown list to select the Region to filter. However I'd like to also be able to display any record where Region is BLANK. I've thought of adding a checkbox to select for this, however doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions of how to do this... Also exploring using a "Search Expression" with a new field.. but isblank("Region") doesn't seem to work either.

    Any tips?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Re: Search Expression

I have done this by using a calculated field in the grid (in the SQL or DBF view definition) which evaluates to either "0" or "1" depending on the value(s) of certain fields, then searched based on that. Then set the checkbox choices to:

    Text for when checked|1

Thank you... I will give it a try...

Seems to me though that this is a workaround no? Shouldn't there be a way to search within the records themselves without having to edit the table structure by adding a calculated field? (Unless I'm misunderstanding you).

      Thanks,
      Bill

In v10 you can modify the search query (DBF or SQL) to your hearts' desire... however for v9 not quite as much...

I did not mean editing the table structure, just the view in the grid... calculations etc. from .dbf files are not honoured on the web side anyway at the moment.

I attached a couple of shots of how you add such a field to a grid in DBF grids.

          OMG... thanks!

I was wondering what the significance of that was... now I had light-bulb moment! Thank you!

I see how a calculated field now gets populated as a field to search in.

I'm trying to only display records where the "Region" is "blank".

Region is lookup into another table where all the "regions" are listed.
In my grid, when a region isn't identified, there is just a "-" (dash) to indicate no region selected (I have no idea where the dash came from, I would have expected just a blank choice). Anyhow, when I submit the form in the grid, with all the "-" (taking the place of the blanks), I notice that the records in the table actually get populated with dashes! (rather than remaining blank, like I would hope). So the search for "isblank" won't work, as the fields are no longer technically blank.

          This seems to work great!
          blankregion = if(isblank("Region").OR.Region="-","1","0")

          I can't thank you enough!

Maybe you can try Using "|" to separate Display from saved values in dropdowns etc?

            Glad it worked!

What is really strange is that I was trying to figure this one out for ages and kept thinking I have to wait for v10... however as far as I can tell all I used was v9 or even v8 technology/scripting....
