Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Page Timeout Problem

I have a police report application that seems to "timeout" rather quickly. In this scenario, the user is not logged out of the system, just the application he or she is working on, and I'm trying to find a way to stop it from happening.

    Here's what happens:

An Officer uses the login page to log into the main system, and is presented with a menu of applications. (All of the applications require the user to be logged in to access them.) He chooses the "incident report" application from the main menu, which consists of a tabbed gridlinker with 8 tabbed pages.

The officer starts writing the report, and maybe gets through the first two or three tabbed pages, and has submitted the data on those pages, then, while working on the next tabbed page, stops for a short time to answer the phone or talk to someone, but has not yet submitted the data on this particular page, and has not closed out of it. Basically, the report is sitting idle with half the page filled out.

He goes back to the page he was working on, enters in some additional information, and when he clicks the submit button, the system returns a message saying "No Records Found." At this point the officer has to close out of that particular incident report application, and use the main menu to open it back up again. (Logging back into the system is NOT required.)

The officer opens up the report application again, goes to the tabbed page he was originally working on, and nothing is there, because apparently when he hit the "submit" button the first time, he was somehow logged out of that particular application or page, and nothing was saved, even though he is STILL logged into the main system.

Any ideas what is causing this or how to stop it, or at the very least, extend the time allowed to remain on an "open page?"

    Re: Page Timeout Problem

This may have been caused by a session time out.

On the application server there should be a menu option:

Web > Application Server > Sessions (tab) > session lifetime (in seconds).

Default this is set as 900 seconds. You can increase it.

      Hi Ron

I did in fact just set it to 1800 seconds, but if that is the problem, I'm curious why the user isn't logged out of the overall system, instead of just the page he or she is working on

Is there a separate session timer for individual pages someplace?

        Rich,

I believe the sessions are based on that setting and the server deletes the session physical from the drive and then it no longer exists, thats why.

Although I see some strange session issues when working in dev environment, but I need to update my versions as I stayed in a version like 9 months old because of a certain client.

Hi Rich, did you have a look at the link I gave in my first reply? See especially the entry of Steve in there.
