Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Why isn't www.alphasoftware.com using WAS?

This has bothered me for a long time but I have never brought it up in conversations with numerous Alpha Employees.

So I am putting this question out to the forum:
Why doesn't Alpha Software use WAS for their website? They offer their products for sale so that programmers write applications and websites for our clients, yet they don't use it for their clients.

I find this strange. Do you?

Re: Why isn't www.alphasoftware.com using WAS?

increasingly parts of our web site are using the Alpha WAS

historically our site was built long before the WAS existed and rather than redoing stuff that worked, we have chosen to put our resources in making alpha five a better product

if we were to start from scratch - it would be a no brainer to do our whole site using the Alpha Five WAS

    thanks for asking

Richard, thanks for the reasoning. While your site has gotten progressively modern with flash and other enhancments, I just found it strange.

I think that alpha five is the fastest and easiest way of creating complex web APPS but if you just want to make a static web page there aré beter programs out there

Re: Why isn't www.alphasoftware.com using WAS?

My website has been all-Alpha for almost a year now. Problem is always time. I really want to revamp several portions, take advantage of some nifty JavaScript utilities. The other problem is avoiding using my own website as an experimental site rather than implementing only what is tested and proven to be the best. The key is that my website is based on my own Template and that makes it somewhat consistent with my clients' websites.

In answer to the statement about Alpha being good for complex web apps, a website (at least mine) really is a complex web application - data-driven, with content, styles, users and security all centrally managed, etc.

Maybe Alpha should hire Steve to update their website using 'WAS'.

Re: Why isn't www.alphasoftware.com using WAS?

In my opinion, it would be worth the allocation of resources to redo the Alpha site using Alpha technology.

By not using its own technology, Alpha Software takes a hugh credibility hit. How many people would buy General Motors cars if all the GM executives drove Toyotas? What if Coke employees only drank Pepsi?

On the other hand, what would be better advertising than to have the Alpha site up and running the software on a live ecommerce site?

I started using Alpha software during the DOS era and I loved it. I last actively used the software with A5V4 though I purchased V6-7. I was about to upgrade a couple of months ago but changed my mind when I realized that the Alpha site was not using its own software. Don't tell you have superior software that can be rapidly implemented--show me.

as you can see with v10 we have the ability to create modern/fast/interactive AJAX powered websites.

                        Have you seen this.
