Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    CSS Issue

I have two sylesheets attached to an a5w page. The first stylesheet contains div tags to define various sections of the page. The second stylesheet is an Alpha CSS file that contains the classes for the Alpha components.

It seems that CSS for the component is ignored or overriden by the first stylesheet. The components display on the page, but the table / cell backgrounds and borders are missing.

I don't know CSS super well, so I'm wondering if someone can help me understand what might be going on.

    Thanks much.

Open your page and find the body html tag. It probably has a class assigned from Alpha. Remove it, make it just <body>. I remove Alpha's body class on 100% of my pages.

Thanks, Steve. So, would it be safe just to remove the body class from the css stylesheet?

      Thanks for the help.

Here's the thing about Alpha's CSS editor - you can't remove the body class from the style sheet. Or, you can, but then you can't use the editor anymore, need to use Notepad. Alpha will just add it back in when you open the editor. Once you start using Notepad to edit your style sheet, there can be some additional problems if you try to use the editor. Personally, I don't use the CSS editor.

This is super helpful to know, Steve.

However, even after removing the body class tag, my components still aren't showing borders or backgrounds.

If you have a chance to take a quick look at my HTML, you can see the page and view the source here.

          Thanks, again.

            Alex,

I took a look at the page source, and the link to your Osx stylesheet is down in the body of your page, not in the head section where it belongs.

The Alpha components automatically enter this link with a statement like:

            ?x_(componentalias).Output.Head.CSS_Link

In your case, something in your page source is causing this line to enter the link in the body instead.

If you can't figure out what, then perhaps you could post the page source here and we can help you look.

              Pat,

Thanks for taking a look. The reason the stylesheet was showing up in the body is that I'm using an a5w_include. You can see how I'm building a page template using several a5w_include's. I did try placing the link to the css stylesheet in the head, but it didn't affect the component background or border styles.

Here's the source code for the page. Perhaps I need to also post the code for the "template_header.a5w" page?

              Thanks much.

                Re: CSS Issue

When I said in my last post that there were other 'problems', I left out the detail. So here are some other issues using your app as an example:

The Alpha CSS file has a different letter case than the CSS tags in the document. For instance, the CSS file has "OSXFormTable" while the document has "OsxFormTABLE". CSS syntax is case sensitive -- it SHOULD always be lower case, but you can't fix this in the component*. The Alpha CSS files have typos in them (embedded spaces in selectors) and somewhere in the process of using the editor, I don't exactly know where yet, the case also gets changed. So the typos get fixed and the case gets changed - and then (since the new selectors don't match what Alpha expects in the CSS file) Alpha adds them all back in with default settings and you have TWO sets of selectors. So you have to ensure the case in your document (which you have no control over) is the same as in the CSS file. That will fix your boarder problem.

A couple things just for observation:

You have multiple references to the same CSS and JavaScript files, up in the head area.

Your own CSS file has hundreds of empty selectors, things like "height:;" with no value. This is caused directly by using the Alpha editor and one of several reasons I don't use it anymore.

Another problem you may have elsewhere is that Alpha places the CSS reference inside the document, not in the Head area. So note your home page, the CSS reference is down near the component. This causes problems if (not the case on your home page) there are more than one component per page.

Another observation, you may notice your mainContent div does not stretch down to cover the entire content. I'm not sure I know the solution for this without playing with it. Normally it is fixed with a 'clearing div' at the very bottom of and inside the mainContent div. Such as <div style="clear:both"></div>

                * actually you can, but its not worth it.

                  Re: CSS Issue

                  Steve,

Again, super helpful. I appreciate you taking time to look at the page source.

I was able to correct some of the issues - multiple references to the js & css in the head, remove empty selectors, reference to css in the body.

I was not able to see the issue with the case inconsistency between css & document. When I look at the CSS, the tag is spelled the same as the document (OSXFormTABLE). I might not be looking in the right place(s), though.

Anyway, I still haven't fixed the borders & backgrounds of the component.

Thanks so much for your help.

Use Firefox and get FireBug to review your pages. Press F12, Inspect then highlight the component area. The HTML will show along with all CSS to the right. When you highlight your component NONE of Alpha's CSS is active (which you knew).

Fixed! When you mentioned the case of the selector, I was looking at TABLE vs Table. The real issue was OSX vs Osx.

Thanks so much for working this to resolution with me, Steve. I'm not sure what I'd do without help from folks like you.
