Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Compute Age

    This is three parts really but I'll take anything right now as I've been trying to get this to work for hours.

    1) I'm using gridlinker with the main table at the top and the data entry table below. The main table holds Name, DOB etc. In the grid below once the user has entered a date I'd like to compute the persons age. I created the code below (along with many many variations) but it still tells me there's an error "Variable is of different type" on the last line.

    The field is a character field so I thought I'd need to compute the age and then convert it to a character type. I just can't get it to work.

    Dim KidDob as c
    dim DA as d
    DA=Convert_Type(DataSubmitted.Assessment_dt,"d")
    KidDob=convert_type(lookup("[pathalias.adb_path]\P_Students","Stud_No = " + quote("999999"),"Stud_dob"),"d")
    DataSubmitted.Age_assessment=convert_type(age(KidDob,DA),"c")

    I entered the student ID (999999) to see if I can get anything to work but that ID would come from the current grid.

    2) Do I even need to do a lookup to get the DOB if the DOB field is already visible in the top grid?

    3) Is there a function to calculate the Age in Years and Months, for example 16.2 (16 years and 2 months)

    Hope it's okay to ask those questions together instead of starting a new post for each.

    Thanks
    -John

    Re: Compute Age

    It is a little difficult from your description to know exactly when you want age calculated and how you want it displayed. However, based on what I think you are doing:
    1. It seems you want to know the "age" based on difference between DOB and a date submitted via your grid. Is this DataSubmitted.Assessment_dt value written to a table? If not it must be stored in a variable to be used later.
    The age in years is:
    age = (convert_type(DataSubmitted.Assessment_dt) - KidDob)/365.25
    (This assumes KidDod is a date). This can be displayed in a grid without conversion to character.
    You show a function "age" in your calculation but there is no such function, unless you have written a UDF.
    2. Yes and no. No if the age is a variable that is displayed as part of the grid that alreday contains KidDob.
    3. Do a search in the forum for "age years" and you will find a number of solutions.

      Re: Compute Age

      Oops!
      It has been pointed out to me that the function age() does exist. However, it does not give the age in years and months as required. As mentioned in my earlier post there are other threads such as this with a UDF that with a little modification can achieve whatever is required.
