Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Request.Remote_Addr Remote address

    I have a field in a a5 table remoteserver.

I would like it to collect the server address from where an enquiry came.

    The component is a dialog.
I found the page: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...t_Variable.htm and imagine that Request.Remote_Addr is used in the table Field Rules but I cannot see where.
Can anyone please explain how this is carried out?
    Many Thanks
    John

    Re: Request.Remote_Addr Remote address

On a grid you can do this-

In BeforeValidateNewRecords Event put something like this
    DataSubmitted.Remote_IP = Request.REMOTE_ADDR

DataSubmitted.Remote_IP is a field on the detail part of my grid.

I'm only interested where the request comes from if a new record is added. You could get the same info for an existing validation if that is what you need.

      Re: Request.Remote_Addr Remote address

Not sure if it make a difference but I am using a Dialog box not a grid.

The table field concerned is called Remoteaddress.

In the dialog builder Properties of Server Events - Validate - Form Events
      I placed "DataSubmitted.Remote_IP = Request.Remoteaddress"
However if I run the form I get this error

Errors in: event.Form Level Validate code:
      Property not found
      Request.Remoteaddress subelement not found

      Any ideas whats wrong please?
      Thanks

        Re: Request.Remote_Addr Remote address

        John,

You are mixing syntax between Grid and Dialog. DataSubmitted is used in grid events. And even if it were a grid, you have the syntax in reverse. And you cannot do any of this in the Validate event, only the AfterValidate. And the request variable is named Request.Remote_Addr, not Request.Remoteaddress.

        the syntax would be:

        tbl.remoteaddress = Request.Remote_Addr

but you need the rest of the code, open the table, start change, write values, close table, etc.

Thanks for the guidance, most welcome!

It seems now that I should be collecting some code snippets to store as reference code.
I tried to follow the instructions at page http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...rted_Title.htm
but is seems very different to my version 9.
eg if I select Interactive window there is no book icon to select, it goes straight into Code Editor then I cannot see either of these

select "Code Library" from the drop down menu of the floating window
in the Code Editor you may also select Code > Code Library
Do you think I have the wrong page or perhaps a mismatch of Alpha versions?
          Regards
          John

That link did not go to any instructions. The URL for the help i always that same stupid URL. I think you have to give us the page title to search on. But I can tell you the Help is a mixture of V7-8, some 9. Most is relevant, but much you have to augment when you get in front of the current version.

Instead of copying the URL from the address line, right click the link on the page and copy the URL from there.

Then we get a URL that takes us to the proper page..

                  Re: Request.Remote_Addr Remote address

One more point if I may,
When a code library is created, is that available to all alpha projects on this machine or is is available to just the project in which it was created.

If its available to all projects where is the code library located.
                  Many thanks

                    Re: Request.Remote_Addr Remote address

I think I have found the answer by opening several code library projects and it seems that all code libraries are available to all projects.

Its often the case (for me anyway) that writing down a question in a logical manner causes the thinking process to improve and the answer sometimes pops up!
