Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    dbf File Speed...Limitations..."Benchmarks"

    Hi...

I've read a lot of posts on the size limit for each dbf but I'm curious what others have found performance wise. How many transactions can it process at once, a second, locks...any "benchmarks" if you will. I have a web application that I'm in the process of developing or better yet "figuring out" as I've never done this before. The application will be a replacement for a 10+yr old Access db that is a mess. The dB is about 100mgs so about 10mg a year growth. Speed is terrible...thousands of duplicate records...so much so that I won't import the data to a new system. Users...about 100. Any input on what others are doing and seeing performance wise would be greatly appreciated.

    Thx
    Joe

It will import it's all about experience. The numbers given seem reasonable. 100 users, duplicate records, mess etc. Plus you have never done it before? How has this been managed in the past, you may want to engage some expert Alpha assistance on the project to oversee and direct you. Let me know, if you want I'll take a look at your file.

I know others have complained about the speed of Alpha Five,
But I have always found the performance of Alpha Five to be great.
I believe there are four major factors in a database's speed,
      1. Hardware
      2. Size of the database
      3. Capability of the database engine (A5)
      4. Design and installation by the developer.
      -
I suggest that the last factor is what causes the majority of databases to be sluggish, doesn't matter if it is Access Alpha Five, or whatever.
The speed difference between a well designed database and a poorly designed database is not 10 - 20 %, but more likely thousands to tens of thousands of times.
The advantage of Alpha Five in all this is that Alpha Five allows you to design and customise a database quite easily, unfortunately this flexibility means that you can also do it poorly. eg Alpha Five almost always has a database work, but work well is a bit different.

I have a client who had a dbf table with hundreds of thousands of record that was increasing by about 10,000 per month. It took several minutes to sort and extract the records he needed. He converted to MySQL, and it now takes seconds.

So, my suggestion is, if you are starting from scratch, try MySQL.

Thanks guys...I've been playing with MySql and the problem that I'm finding is my field rule calculations don't work so I'm assuming I'd have to recreate all of those in MySql correct? With dbf files the rules work fine (I assume because they are native to A5)...I'd now have to learn two very large products in order to accomplish my goal. Yes, I may be biting off more than I can chew but we don't have a budget to outsource a dev project but if I can get fairly versed in it I may be able to do a bulk of the work with some mentoring.

Is this application you are buildin is for an intranet or the internet?

if you are building it for an intranet I'll recomend to go with dbfs because of the time and efort it will take you to acomplish your goal. besides alpha five v10(beta right now) works very fast even with dbfs

              Re: dbf File Speed...Limitations..."Benchmarks"

It will be for the Intranet...no internet. Plus we're talking 10mgs of data a year given the current db is 10+yrs old and only 100mgs. Plus...its an mdb file which contains the tables, reports, forms, etc. So the actual data is less the 100mgs.

              Thx

                Joe,

I have a customer running 24/7/365 on an Intranet basis using the dbf files and speed is fine using dbf file formats. The fact that you are going 10mb a year is not that much. I might also look at taking current records and archiving to history files at a period of time, making then still available but not taken up resources.

                Speed should be ok.
