Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating and using Template

I imagine somewhere there is an excellent help item which explains how to create, store and use templates in Alpha5.
Can anyone please point me to where I may find this?
    Many thanks

    Re: Creating and using Template

If you are talking about the Beta feature of storing grid templates then, with that being a BETA feature, um, it's not documented in great detail yet.

Otherwise, please explain what you mean.

          Thanks
I expect I am mixing names.
I am more used to using Dreamweaver and that allows a page to be created which can be used as a foundation for other pages to be created from.
Not sure what this is called in A5
"Templates" usually contain headers and footers sometimes menus.

You can create your own template(s) using the a5w_include() or other functions to retrieve data with parameters that are passed.

There is a template that was written by Steve Wood that is well worth the money. See it at http://www.alphatogo.com

              Thanks
So the idea is create headers, footers, sidebars etc and then use the include a5w_include() statement to use the items where required?

                That's one option.

The other is to use a page variable to pass in the url to tell the system what includes to get or what data to get out of a table.

Both options can be used together. There is no single best way to do this...

That is what I do, yes. It might be useful to set up a basic layout and store it as template.a5w or similar, then for a new page you can just duplicate the file and save it with a new name.

v10 has page layout builders and grid templates, but that is not quite the same as a simple page template, it can be used the same way though but I've only really tried the tabbed UI builder in the beta.

                      Thanks NoeticCC

I too have duplicated pages in the past and it is an ideal method where includes exist so that as an include is changed, all pages reflect that change and changes to individual pages are not required. Is that correct in A5?

Yes that is exactly the same in A5 too :)

I tried using <!--a5w_include(footer.a5w)--> to show footer.a5w but it fails to show.
I expect the statement is incorrectly written can anyone explain please?

                              <!-- insert comment -->

                              <%a5 insert a5 code %>

You are using the html comment delimiters to hold a5 code. The code (or cany comment) will be ignored.
