Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5w tag code limit

Is there are limit to the amount of code you can place in an a5w tag on a html page? I have a page where I want to do some order processing and when I get too much code in it, I receive a error stating that "an unhandled exception was generated". When I remove some lines it saves with no errors. It doesn't matter what the code is or even if it is commented. Right now it is about 175 lines.

    Thanks,

    Kristy

    Re: a5w tag code limit

Well many of my a5w pages contain many more lines of code than that and I don't have any problems. There must be something in your code.

Did you start this page using a "new" page?
Did you rename this page and then delete old code and added new code?
Did you have a component and delete it?

If you think your code is good, try copying all of it, start a completely new virgin page and paste your code in there and then try it again.

175 lines ain't nothin. Time to track down the problem in your code.

I have tried copying the code to a new page and it doesn't give an error when I save it the first time. However if I save it again, I get the error again. I even comment all the a5 code and save it and there is still an error.

          Quick question: you said
...place in an a5w tag on a html page.
Is your page a .a5w or a .htm page? Pages must be .a5w pages if you want any a5 code on them.

My code is in an a5w page. I started putting my code in a new page and have added the code back a few sections at a time. Each time I have tested the code and it works fine. When I get to a certain point, I get the error when I save the page. However, it still saves and when I publish and run it, it works. This is frustrating.

The syntax, and what you're doing with A5 code should have no bearing on whether you can save a page of code. At the time you're creating the page, Alpha's not doing anything to evaluate the code - it's just a bunch of text. Saving the code, as far as the editor is concerned, is the same as saving the text of a chapter from your favorite book.

So, I wonder if you have a recent build of A5, or maybe you're working with a very old build?

Can you go to some other database / project and build a nice big A5W page? I can just be several hundred lines of comments to test if you want.

Steve, I have the latest build 2095 w/addins build 3264. I tried copying the code from the a5w page with the error to a new a5w page in a new database. It works fine. Is there a problem with my database?

I looked further in the message board and found someone else with the same problem. See Optihawk's post at http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...t=76279&page=2. Looks like he doesn't have the problem in an earlier A5V9 build. I tried an earlier version on another computer and no errors. I then updated it and voila, the unhandled exception error returns.

If its not proprietary, attach the code in a text file here so we can test. Maybe it is some special character in your code. But I agree with the others and have code on at least on A5W page over 2000 lines no problem.

                      Re: a5w tag code limit

I cannot share my real code but I have tried making an a5w page with the following line repeated over and over:

                      ' Problem with code

It will save fine until I get to 287 lines. I can however copy to a "smaller" project database, open it, and save it with no problems. It really is like there is issue with the accumulative size of the project but it will somehow work in an older build. It is really weird.

                        Kristy,

                        One more guess...

Are you by any chance adding those lines in the same <%a5 ...%> tags as a component? There may be an issue there.

If your page has components, each one should have its own tags and any additional code should be in a separate set of tags, like...

                        <%a5
                        Alpha component xbasic
                        %>
                        <%a5
                        your additional xbasic
                        %>

No there is no component. It is just a single a5 tag for processing an order.

                            Re: a5w tag code limit

Yesterday, Kristy and I played with this to see if we could find a pattern to this problem. Keep in mind that, other than popping up an "unhandled exception error" every time you click on the A5 page or attempt to publish, the code works!

We created a new database (based on a suggestion by Steve) and created one A5W page and added the code to it. No problems. This would lead one to believe that the database is corrupt; however, from what we can tell, adding code to an A5W page does NOT affect the database. If it does, then Alpha is not updating the "modified" date and time of the database files. Not likely.

After reading another post we found, we went back to the original install of A5V9 and loaded the database in there and guess what? No errors. Updated to the latest build, and the error comes back. This very definitely appears to be a problem with the latest build.

We've emailed Selywyn to see if they would admit us to the V10 beta so we can see if this error exists in the latest version.

Send you the code that is in the A5W page would NOT allow you to duplicate the error (as we found), you would need our entire database and unfortunately, it would take quite a bit of work to dump the data since it is accessing both local files and files on our network.
