Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Specifying the 'from' in an email ....

    In my application, users can send emails to anyone, but the 'from' is always from MY email address. So when a person wants to reply to that email, the reply goes back to MY email address, and not to the actual user.

    The code I use is:

    vTo = "[email protected]"
    dim pm as P
    dim ps as P
    dim email_result as l
    'vMessageStr = "here is my messsage."
    flag = email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.aol.com", 25, "my_email", "my_password")
    if flag = .f. then
    ?"error"
    'report an error to the user
    end
    end if
    pm._to = vTo
    pm.from = "[email protected]"
    pm.from_alias = "my_email"
    pm.subject = "This is the email subject line ..."
    pm.attachments = ""
    'pm.html_message = "<HTML><strong>This is really great!</strong><br><br></HTML>"
    'pm.html_message = pm.html_message+"<HTML>this is a test</HTML>"
    pm.html_message = "Well this this this This is a test"
    email_result = email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
    email_smtp_close(ps)

    I figured changing the pm.from and/or the pm.alias to the user's actual email address would do the trick. But, when I do that the email does not even get sent.

    What am I missing?

    You aren't missing anything. The from is always the from you established in the email profile.

      Hi Pat,

      Thanks for responding.

      I am not using an email profile??

      But, bottom line, is there a way to have emails come "from" the particular user?

      Thanks for your help.

        Gary,
        This is what I have in a dialog:

        pm.from = CurrentForm.Controls.YourEmail.value

        The CurrentForm.Controls.YourEmail.value is another field the user completes (user's email address) while completing the dialog. When the recipient receives this email and desires to reply and clicks reply on the email program, the CurrentForm.Controls.YourEmail.value value is in the "To:" email program box.

          Eric,

          Thanks for your reply!

          Unfortunately, my problem is when I put the user's email address in the pm.from, the email does not get sent at all.

            Contact your ISP, this is probably a limitation of their SMTP server. Many providers require that the from address is from your actual account and not some other address.

              Gary,

              According to your code it looks like you are using AOL to send your email. I am pretty sure that AOL will not send mail where the from address is not a valid AOL email that is assigned to the AOL account that you are logging into their SMTP server with. My only suggestion is trying to use a different SMTP mail server that will allow the from address to be different than the host email account that you log in with.

                Thanks for that info!

                Do you know of another that will allow this - Yahoo?

                  Gary,

                  Most of the big ones, AOL, yahoo, Gmail and others will more than likely block sending emails with different email addresses to basically block spam from being sent out through their servers. The first place I would check would be whoever is hosting your web site.

                    For very little money, you could get a simple windows site hosted. Call it your email site. I pay under $8/mo and with that I can have several email address accounts. If you go this route, remember your email addresses will end with @yoursitename.com, org, whatever, so choose a wise name for your domain name. I have several windows accounts and my Alpha web site account with Zebrahost because their customer service is very good. This should solve your problem.

                      Thanks Eric, Jeff, and Lenny,

                      That is very good information. I will investigate the options.

                        Dr Gary,
                        I had a similar problem like this circa 18 months ago when my ISP changed its port rules aand other settings.
                        The fast and easy solution was to start an account with www.smtp.com
                        (Later my ISP fixed the problem)
                        Alternativly anyone with a mail server can give you access to there smtp service, naturally your mail will go the long way, but I doubt anyone will notice :-)
