Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

combine two tables to form one grid view

How do you create a web grid that works like a default browse when viewing a set that combines two linked tables (one-to-many)

I have and orders table that contains:
    Invoice#, customer, item, qty, price
    or
    00001,Bill,hat,2,$10.00
    00001,Bill,shoe,1,$25.00
    00002,Sam,hammer,1,$5.00

I have a customer table that contains:
    customer, state, zip
    or
    Bill,NC,27103
    Sam,NY,27111

I need the following to appear in a "single" grid on a a5w page.

    00001,Bill,hat,2,$10.00,NC,27103
    00001,Bill,shoe,1,$25.00,NC,27103
    00002,Sam,hammer,1,$5.00,NY,27111

I have tried many things, but I can find a one-to-many relationship link when using grids

As long as state and zip don't need to be updateable, just make them calculated fields using lookupc()

That looks like a one to one relationship to me.

Each order line links to one customer.

My actual data is a little different.
I am trying to go from a single invoice number to many items purchased on the invoice.

I end up not getting all the records when I use a standard grid and try to link my tables.

John, In version 9 use a grid linker New->web component-> grid linker from here you can set up a set pretty much the same as the desktop (default browse).

Or wait for version 10 where it will be a lot neater and easier.

Ah, then you have a 3rd table that you didn't include in your explanation? One that is the invoice header and has one record per invoice?

"I think" because the grid linker has only link types called: one-to-first, one-to-last, and one-to-closest, I am not always getting 100% of my records.

                Hi John,

Do you have a different grid linker to me?

Detail of a grid linker from the help file
The GridLinker technique combines fields from 1 parent table and 2 or more child tables that have one-to-many relationships.
If your two linking fields are the same then you should see all related child records.

Try following the help file here and test it on the Alphasports example

It says it, but the selection item/box isn't available. See attached

The grid linker is at a higher level than you are looking at.

The procedure is to build a grid for each table/view and then use the grid linker to link the grid components together.

Remember Lance said 'In version 9 use a grid linker (menu navigation) New->web component-> grid linker'

That may not give you the effect that you want though... at least as a invoice_header to invoice line... You may have to build from the invoice_line to invoice_header to customer in a one to one view to get what you want.

You can search by Invoice number to have a drop down to pick an invoice number...

                      John,

In the image you included you have a set where the items sold is the parent and the order header is the child so yes that would only be a one to one relationship. You need to create another set where the order header is the parent and the items sold is the child and then you will have a one to many set that you can then use.

Based on post #1, the inverted set is more appropriate to get all of the information on one line.

I was replying to the fact that he said that there was not a choice for a one to many link as shown in the image and what I was just trying to point out is you can not have a one to many link choice when the parent is the many and the linked table is one.
