Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Incremental Line Numbers

I have a test database where I am experimenting with various things. One of which is an incremental number on a child table that always starts with "01" as in Dr Waynes example here but that is based upon a set which is not appropriate for the web.

Im attaching the database, look at the header table and line_items which are Dr Waynes tables.

My adaptation of this is in the steps_tbl and the set is script_steps it works fine on the desktop, however it doesn't work for the web. I am using V10 and thought that perhaps this would work as field rules are now honoured and this is set in the field rules ONSAVERECORD.
The grid I tried this on is Header, the records with a line_item value were done on the set in the desktop. The other entries demonstrate its not working.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to make this happen?

    Regards
    Andy

I believe, based upon comments by Selwyn at the conference the other day, that only certain field rules are honored. I seriously doubt that xbasic (UI) event field rules would work on the web, since those rules are keyed to forms and browses only.

To do what you want you would need to code it.

        Thanks Peter,

I've no idea how I would go about that, would it be a calculated javascript field?

I don't think you need javascript, just xbasic. Get the highest increment no for the "child" table based upon the linking field value, and increnet it by one for the new child record. If you don't find a child, assign 1 as the value.

            Thanks again Peter,
Whilst I understand to an extent what you're saying I'm afraid I'm just learning xbasic and really don't have a clue how to do that, hence trying to learn from Dr Waynes site with his examples, and I certainly don't know where to put it in the grid!

Andy, I'm not unsympathetic. If you were using a dialog, you could put it in the Validate event - i.e. assign the value to a variable, before the form is submitted. In a grid maybe you could use the AfterUpdateRecords event? But like the event name says, it would be after the record has been submitted, requiring that you change the value of the newly created record. So it wouldn't even show, until a refresh. OTOH, if you use a grid's detail section to submit the record, when you go back to the grid view, I would expect the value would show there, since the grid would be refreshed. As far as the xbasic goes, I haven't got the time to work through it. But you might be able to piece it together from examples on this board and PKW's stuff. Good luck!

                Thanks Peter,

                I appreciate your time.

I've emailed Selwyn to confirm this is not in V10.

                Thanks again
