The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    copy table

    I would like to copy a table to a CD so that I can append it to another Database on another non-connected computer. How do I do this?

    Export it to excel and put it on your cd
    Then create an append operation where the excel doc. is the source

    Caution: Excel has a limited number of rows

        Here is what I tried and what happened. First I took the advice about creating an excel file of the file. I saved the file as a "97-2003 Workbook" excel file. with the .xls extension. However when I attempted to append it to the A5V9 table the program told me that it was not a 4.0 excel file. (Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 do not have a specific 3.0 or 4.0 excel type.) I attempted this 3 times making sure that I saved it in the correct type, that is an excel *.xls type file.
        When that failed I created a comma delimited file with extension *.cvs and used append function of Alpha five. This was successful with small files. However when I tried this with a larger file (10,000 records, each consisting of only 3 fields, each about 25 characters in length) Alpha Five literally locked up and I had to start over. It was only when I divided the excel file into 11 parts each with 999 records or so, that was I successful. Is there a limit to how many records that Alpha Five can append at any one time? I would hate to have to do this 11 times just to add records to a table.

          1. Try exporting to excel
          2. in excel go to: 'File / properties'
          3. See were the file is being saved by alpha
          4. DO NOT SAVE the excel in your office 2007 or 2010
          5. Go to the Directory where the file is being saved by alpha
          6. And try the append operation with that original file

            I don't understand your directions. What file am I exporting from Alpha to Excel?
            I have a file called Customers.dbf in the directory A5V9/Databases/ABC.
            I need to add the records from the excel spreadsheet to the table in A5V9/Databases/ABC called Customers.
            Under what filename do I save the Customers excel spreadsheet?

            In order to append I need to save an excel spreadsheet with the extension xls, otherwise alpha five rejects it.

            If I attempt to export it into alpha five I have to do it by 999 records at a time.

              what im tryin to say is that alpha will export your table in the correct xls format. So if you go to the directory where alpha is exporting the file originally and try the append operation with that file you shouldn't have any problems.
              it should be stored in something like
              C:\Documents and Settings\Your_username\Configuraci�n local\Temp\mytable.xls

              Solution 2
              1. In alpha, duplicate your table to something like mytable_temp.dbf (right click menu / utilities )
              2. Drop the table from your database (right click menu again)
              3. Go to your database directory an copy mytable_temp.dbf file
              4. Add the table to the database where you want to do the append Operation (add table /set on alphas control panel menu)
              5. Create an append opperation an run it

                Do you want to append the table to a database that does not have this table or append the records in a table from one database to another? (both have the same table in them but one has additional records)

                  I have an excel spreadsheet with 10,200 lines and 3 columns.
                  I have an alphaFive table with 3 fields and 100 records.
                  I need to put all the lines of the excel spreadsheet into the alpha Five table.

                    What does not work when you use the import genie? This is a fairly simple procedure, so I am not really sure where you are currently at with the descriptions above.

                    I Generally would save the Excel file as a CSV file and use the import genie. I import on a daily basis csv files containing over 100,000 records without a problem. Can you attach a copy of your excel file or csv file?
