Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Reporting repeated data for targeted records?

I need help from the Alpha5v9 elite or at least more elite than me which is setting the bar pretty low.

I have a data set that includes records of individuals that may be assessed many multipule times over time. Because this is part of a webapp I am not setting this up as a relational database but rather on one table where the individual ID may repeat for each occurrence and the occurrences are differentiated by date and a descriptive time point variable (incase dates are tricky).

So I need to create a report where variables for each time point are listed and the differences between them are calculated for the same individual. I cannot find a way to make this work in a report.

Example: Peter has his weight measured 2 different times each recorded in a different record in the table but Peter has an ID that is unique to him and repeats for each of his records in the table.

    The report should list:

Weight at Time Point 1 | Weight at Time Point 2 | Difference between Time point 1 and Time Point 2.

For only Peter if his records are selected.

I can easily get an aggregate report for all the data in the table based on Time Point 1 and Time Point 2 but not for the individual. Any ideas about the logic I need to use to make this happen.

    Thanks,

    Chuck

    Chuck,
Would it work to export the individual's records to a temporary table and take the difference between each record?

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure I get what you mean. Calculating the difference is not a problem. That is easily handled using a stored variable in the report. The difficult part is to format a report for only one person when that person has multiple records in the table. If I select two records for this one person, I will get two reports not just one condensed report for the one person with two records.

I am suggesting that you collect all of Peter's records (query by name or ID), and take the earliest and the latest records and the difference between the two and write them out to a temporary table, and base the report on the "extract" table, that should give you what you want.

I guess I am still behind on what can be done with reports. I thought the report was created and stored in connection with an existing table. I deleted a table one time an all reports associated with it were also deleted.

Is your suggestion covered well in the help documentation? A cursory review did not turn up anything.

          Thanks

Boy, if I keep up this obfuscation, I will have to run for political office. Sorry.

Using xbasic, you can copy one record for each individual, along with the associated fields, to a new, temporary table. The report would then be based on the new table. This could be done on the AfterValidation event.

Before the records are copied, the table is zapped (all existing records are removed) and the table is filled with the desired records.

Using an extract table is a great way to get Alpha to print a desired report.

Hope this is a bit more clear.
