Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dialog value won't save

    I've never seen anything like this, and after four hours of trying to get one value to save, gotta ask for other suggestions.

    I'm building a dialog component based on the WebUsers.A5W sample that ships with Alpha. I've enhanced it quite a bit so that the component adds users to a table and to the security framework. All works just fine. Except this:

    Code:
    t.Email = currentform.Controls.userid.value
    No matter what I do, this, and only this value, won't save to the table.

    1) I've verified that this control holds a valid value by passing it to a variable and displaying it on another page.

    2) This control is the source of the UserID for security. It's being recorded there just fine.

    3) I can hardcode an email value, and that works just fine.

    4) There are no field rules in the receiving table that might get in the way (no rules at all on this field, in fact).

    5) Probably some other things too. I'm plumb outta ideas.

    Anyone ever run into something like this or have suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Steve,

    I can see why you are having trouble. I do that all the time, too.

    A couple thoughts, which you may have thought of already...
    Is the field in the table large enough to hold the email address? I typically alltrim() the control value to avoid trailing blanks.

    Is there any validation set in the field properties that could be getting in the way? (Of course, that should show an error)

    If you just enter "XXX" does it save?

    Are you entering this before or after you set the security? The security system converts to a 32 charater UUID, and maybe that's affecting the result?

      Just try convert_type just to make certain Alpha know's it's a character field at the server end. It may work.

        t.email = alltrim(CurrentForm.Controls.userid.value)

          Re: Dialog value won't save

          Steve -
          I always alltrim(), just didn't show it, and neither worked.

          Peter -
          That's one thing I hadn't thought of or tried, but that made no difference.

          Pat -
          I'd already checked the things you mentioned:
          Field is big enough
          I can hard-code an email address, that works
          No field rules that affect this
          I've tried entering before and after security. I also tried assigning the value to a variable at the very beginning of AfterValidate and using that variable value. No joy.

          Field stays blank, no matter what I do, no errors thrown.

            Re: Dialog value won't save

            I know that alltrim() made the difference for me when I had the same problem. One other idea, I have never named a table field "email" because I know that term is not allowed on a Form; it always converts the field name (on the form, desktop) to Email0. So I have always named my table email field, "emailaddress".

              And t. is infact open?

              How about

              Code:
              Dim pass as C
              pass = alltrim(CurrentForm.Controls.userid.value)
              t.email = pass
              next try

              Code:
              Dim stingOut
              Dim pass as C
              stringOut = alltrim(CurrentForm.Controls.userid.value) +crlf()
              pass = alltrim(CurrentForm.Controls.userid.value)
              stringOut = stringOut+pass +crlf()
              t.email = pass
              stringOut = stringOut+ t.email +crlf()
              file.from_string("c:\pass.txt", stringOut)
              Who knows pass.txt may give you a clue,
              Or you may have overworked your a5 Parser and its rebelling :-)
              lets just hope its not infectuous.

                Colin -

                Been there, done that (see my original post about passing the value to another page). The value is clearly there, and can be passed around, except to the table. And, yes, the table is open. It's recording about 30 other field values; just not t.email.

                Steve -

                While it's an email value, the control is named "UserID". And, as I've noted in this thread, I have no doubt that it contains the value I've given it.

                  Re: Dialog value won't save

                  what if t.email was t.email_add (in the table) - It may be email is a reserved word in the dialog (anything is possible) and it upsetting things.

                    Well, no, that didn't work either Peter.

                    I have a character field named "Notes" that I tried to use to save the ID. That got left blank, too.

                      Strip out the code that saves the values to security. Strip out everything but the code to save it to the database. Since everything else has failed, maybe the security functions are doing something with the value as it passes through the aftervalide event code.
