Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid()

    Just the stuff below on test.a5w.

    It returns a valid Ulink in the local webroot, and in the Interactive. But when I put it on the remote server, it returns a blank.

    I'm confident that the guid is valid, that the security files are properly and completely on the server. Yet, nothing. Blank. And the person who usually has an answer for me also says he's stumped.

    n.b. it's not just with this guid, but all of them in the project.

    Any ideas?

    Code:
    <%A5
    ?a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid("560ef6d890cb493ca70b56497d86a64a")
    %>

    Re: a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid()

    but all of them in the project
    May be that is the clue !
    Do you have a backup of you web-security files that you can overwrite the current ones with.
    Or maybe re-index and re-pack same files
    560ef6d890cb493ca70b56497d86a64a is 32-BYTES is the users file still this ?
    Admittedly I'm guessing here.

      If you are sure the websecurity_users file contain a match to that guid, then perhaps the Guid.SecuritySettings associated with this project has the same value as another project on your same server.

      Note to others - the Guid.SecuritySettings contains a GUID value, but it is different than the GUID(s) assigned to users in the security file.

        Steve - can I just change that value and re-publish? Or is it a critical link that needs to be left alone?

          Re: a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid()

          You can always delete the guid.securitysettings file and it will recreate when you publish ANY one or more files. The value does not link to anything. I delete that file, on both the project side and the server side (you need to delete both) at the beginning of a project if I copied that project from another project. The value in that file MUST be unique to your project on a given server.

            Colin - thanks. Everything's been republished many times.

            Steve - thanks too. I deleted both files, republished, and still no Ulink value.

              And you are sure that GUID exists in the websecurity_users table on the server? I mean you have opened the websecurity_users table in Excel or Alpha and determined that GUID exists and that same record has a ULINK value?

                Re: a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid()

                Are you using the same database with two different projects, and both projects using it own security set up? I had an instance where I tried using two project folders from the same database. Each project published to its own folder. When I tried to use the security, it always defaulted to the older security files.

                I had to create a new database to get the security files to work for the second project.

                Just a thought.

                  Steve -

                  I've verified that web_users.dbf has the values I expect.

                  Dan -

                  One database, not a copy of anything else, one project for the database.

                      Re: a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid()

                      The only thing I can suggest is to put the project on the remote server, put A5 on the remote server, connect with remote desktop. Then open the project and publish the security files that way (naturally set up the profile).

                      I know it shouldn't matter, but I have had some funny things happen (not with the security) when publishing from my development machine to a server. By working directly on the server, things seem to work better. Take it for what it is worth.

                        I don't know by what process the indexes get updated for the websecurity files, but perhaps it is an index corruption problem on the server. Maybe delete the indexes and use a function to reindex, or let security recreate the index files - again I don't know how or when they do this. I've just been told they are self-maintaining.

                          Well, I got it working. Thanks to Jerry Brightbill for his suggestion, and everyone else for your time & suggestions.

                          Code:
                          filename = request.ApplicationRoot + "websecurity_users.dbf"
                          if file.exists(filename)
                          	user_guid = request.variables.guid
                          	vID = table.external_record_content_getfilename, "ulink","","guid=\""+user_guid+"\"")
                          end if
                          This pretty much mimics the function code of a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid(), and it works.

                          I probably should have thought of this / tried this a long time ago, and still don't know why the a5ws function doesn't work here.

                            Glad to see that you have achieved a workaround,
                            although it would be comforting to know why the a5ws_get_ulink_from_guid()
                            doesn't function.
