Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Top 10 - How To's

I know, you were looking for the solutions to the top ten. But I wanted to ask for input on what ARE the top ten How To's you's like to see documentation on? This stems from a couple current discussions that hit on the subject of the Help document. I'm pretty sure that along with a couple other guys, we can write one or two decent solutions to each of ten or so How To questions.

So if anyone wants to chime in, what are your Top Ten - "How do I do that" questions?

Note - I put this in the V9 Web section because I happen to know Web better. But include any Desktop issues in your list. Also, I'd prefer the questions not be related to the new AJAX and other enhanced features in V10 for right now.

Let me try the my first how to
    1. Setup web security and related form
    2. How to custom insert/update/delete data based on grid components. I found out the this is rather not clear with A5.

I will put few more later

      Muhd,

Can you explain #2, what do you mean by "Custom". Actually, can you elaborate on the first one also. That's a large area, can you narrow it down a bit?

How to filter data or redirect user based on the logged in user or group. I'm working on 4 web apps now that all require filtering or page redirection based on certain criteria. Got it to work but the help files weren't real clear. Thanks!!!

            Re: Top 10 - How To's

I'll suggest uploading files. There is great help documentation if using dialogs and dbfs, but almost nothing using grids and detail views or other backend databases.

              Re: Top 10 - How To's

Good stuff so far! Yes, I have some docs on uploading files and do it from Dialogs, Detaila View and A5W pages, and indirectly from Grid rows, so I can expand my existing document. I think that existing document is already available on my website.

Redirection is very important but can I have an example as there are several types of redirection that can take place at different points.

Some of the questions are more like 'modules' and may be more difficult to answer in the format I envisioned for this particular Top Ten. But they can be titles for white papers perhaps.

                Steve,

being able to send an email from a grid row is on my list of things to figure out. I think I would probably want to print a report (silently) and send an email with the report as an attachment to a contact in the grid row.

                  Re: Top 10 - How To's

                  On redirection help: an example
Project resides on a server(1) pointed to by DNS.
The Alpha A5's are on a server(2) only with IP #

We want the web pages to stay pretty and all the images, video's, big pdf's, etc on server 1.

The data (lists, time sheets etc) stay on server 2 and are under Alpha security framework.

Pretty server 1 has in-line frames which point to server 2 for data.

This has to do with the web designers (Dreamweaver) NOT knowing how anything about Alpha5

OH - and can someone stop this blasted auto update reminder from trying to restart my machine :)

Here's the top ten according to this thread so far. I split a few of them up and left a couple out. You can browse to see more detail on each.

Nine below, got room for one more.
                    1. Launch scripted email from a grid row sent to user associated with that grid row. Create a report in the background, then attach and send email.
                    2. Uploading files in general and specifically from Grid Detail.
                    3. Uploading files when the database is not dbf.
                    4. Filter data based on logged in user.
                    5. Filter data based on security group of logged in user.
                    6. Redirect user to page based on various criteria at login.
                    7. Show some kind of 'in process' message to tell users that a process is underway.
                    8. Wizard type pages with "Next" button where each step is dependent on previous. "Checkout" is such an example.
                    9. Set up Security. Big topic! Additional options: take the class or buy the template.

                      Re: Top 10 - How To's

I have set everything up for my web app, only in the end to be told to split things up for the different users.

Without splitting it into 3 projects and thus having to re-make most of it from scratch, is there any way I can change things as they are so when different users log in, they get directed differently and have different permissions for pages?
