Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    auto date entry in dialog box

    I have a dialog and cannot seem to get dates entered into the table.
    All other fields in the dialog box enter into the table correctly.
    ---------------------------------
    One field intjoined should be auto entry date
    In Field types: this is set as User entered
    In Data entry:
    Default Mode is Simple default expression
    Default Value is DATE()
    Skip is .t.
    As this is auto entered there is no line for this in the aftervalidate event and
    the field is not included in the dialog entry list.
    ------------------------------------
    My next date is a calender entered date
    This is set in field rules as User entered and the date is set by the calender.
    In Field rules Data Entry is to default, (no changes are made)
    This appears in the dialog box but never gets saved in the record.

    In aftervalidate I have the line

    t.Intbirthdy = alltrim(currentForm.Controls.Intbirthdy.value)
    Can anyone see where I am going wrong please?
    Thanks
    John

    Re: auto date entry in dialog box

    Seeing as though dialogs have not yet been changed in v10 there is no point asking dialog-related queries in the v10 forum...

    Also if you want something automatically entered into a table, a dialog is pointless - try a grid.
    Thanks for the advice.
    Seems strange that a dialog cannot store a default date.
    Any idea why the dialog box cannot store the date that I insert from the calender?
    Thanks

      Re: auto date entry in dialog box

      If you are used to grids where they do all the work for you, it's hard to remember that in dialogs, everything is character and you have to do the conversions from date or numeric to character and back again.

      So, in intialize, try setting the value as dtoc(date()).

      Then when you save it, try ctod(field value) or convet_type( field value, "D")

      Now it really gets complicated in you bring in field rules, because field rules will operate on the date as a date, not character.

        Thanks Pat
        That sounds very complicated so I am glad I understand a little more about dialogs dates and cahracter requirements.
        I will see what I can do with the grids!

          Using V9 using a grid

          I have date field to cause the auto entry of a date,
          In edit field rules
          Field types: is set as User entered
          In Data entry:
          Default Mode is Simple default expression
          Default Value is DATE()
          Skip is .t.
          If I enter a new record directly into the table the date records correctly
          If I enter the date via a grid it does not get entered in the table;

          Any ideas what may be wrong?
          Thanks

                Is this a Desktop, Web app or Both?
                if its a Web application you dont need field rules set up for the date

                  Thanks
                  It is for a web app, but how can I get a field to default to todays date for the initial entry and the not change.
                  Cheers

                    Re: auto date entry in dialog box

                    Ok if you are using a Dialog you would create a control called say 'tdate'
                    make it a hidden control.
                    then in your initialize you would put currentformcontrols.tdate = date()
                    Grid is a little different.

                      Thanks Chad
                      After getting the comment from Pat Bremkamp above I decided to do this in a grid component and that's where I am having the problems now.

                      The image above may explain this best.
                      Cheers

                        Here you go stripped down component on how to set a default of a hidden field.

                            Thanks for the example Chad.
                            I created a table and all seemed OK but the date field remained empty.
                            Any ideas please?

                              Re: auto date entry in dialog box

                              structure on the table is the field classed as a date?
                              what is the regional settings for the date on your server?
                              you should be able to go to interactive window and type

                              date = date()
                              ?date

                              which should give you a date like below which on this machine is dd/mm/yyyy

                              = {07/10/2009}

                              make sure that the date format matches the field that you hide
                              not sure if this is the answer but its a start.
