Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pass parameter to web page

    Hello All

    I have asked this one previously but with no response so I'm guessing I havent worded it too well. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I could pass a value/parameter from a web grid to a web page. Please bear in mind that the web page that needs the parameter also holds the webgrid, I am not wanting to pass the parameter to another webpage as per other examples I have read. The following code has been inserted into the a5w page:

    tbl=table.open("attachment")
    tbl.enter_begin()
    tbl.Imagefilepath=fn
    tbl.Date = NOW()-30
    tbl.Caseid = ??????
    tbl.Text = attachtxt
    tbl.enter_end(.t.)
    tbl.close()

    I need to get the caseid from the webgrid search function into the field above

    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers

    Jason

    Re: Pass parameter to web page

    Passing a value to a web grid is the same as passing the value to the 'page' as described in other posts. If your URL is mypage.a5w?caseid=100, then 'caseid' can be used in any xbasic or wherever the caseid variable is needed.

    You said you wanted it from the 'search function', which is no problem either. Next time you peform the search, take a close look at the URL. It will have each of the search fields in the URL as parameters. Figure out which one is the caseid and use it. This is true for V9 and prior. In V10 with AJAX enabled, there are no parameters in the URL for searches, instead you need to use one of the Search Events to capture the search parameters and save them as session variables to use on the page.

      Re: Pass parameter to web page

      Hi Steve

      thanks for your reply. I understand what you are saying, sounds easier than I thought. My URL is too long at present, but this is it:

      http://localhost/LivePreview/$$1B46.a5w?SearchEditNotif_SaveURL=&SearchEditNotif_S_ID=225&SearchEditNotif_S_DISEASE=&SearchEditNotif_S_CLASSIFICATION=&SearchEditNotif_S_SUBSTATUS=&SearchEditNotif_SortColumn=&SearchEditNotif_SortDir=&SearchEditNotif_RowCount=Select+Value

      I have tried inserting ID as shown into my code at the top of the page:

      Code:
      <%a5
      dim msg as c = ""
      if eval_valid("cmd")
      dim fn as c
      fn = "G:\COMMON\CDC\Data Manager\AlphaFive\images" + "\\"+ FiletoUpload.filename

      				file.from_blob(fn,FileToUpload.data)
      			    msg = "<a href=\"/" + FileToUpload.filename + "\" target=\"_blank\">" + FileToUpload.filename + "</a> was uploaded<br /><br />"

      	tbl=table.open("attachment")
      	tbl.enter_begin()
      	tbl.Imagefilepath=fn
      	tbl.Date = NOW()-30
      	tbl.Caseid = ID
          'save_to_file(ID,"c:\test.txt")
      	tbl.Text = attachtxt
      	tbl.enter_end(.t.)
      	tbl.close()
      end if

      %>
      Unfortunately i get the following error:

      500 Internal Server Error
      "Script Error
      Error:Script: /ImageUpload.a5w line:15
      tbl.Caseid = ID
      Variable "ID" not found."

      Any ideas where I am going wrong. I have tried a few other things (changing the scope of the ID search variable as global, loading the datasubmitted value into a session variable in the before search event), but the code still doesnt see the variable

      Is it also true that when you are passing values from URL's, they can only be character, and not numeric?

      Cheers

      Jason

        Re: Pass parameter to web page

        The "ID" parameter is named "SearchEditNotif_S_ID" in your URL. So you might add this near the top of your code if you want a value for "ID".

        ID = SearchEditNotif_S_ID

          Re: Pass parameter to web page

          Hi Steve

          I must be thick as a brick! I have changed the code to:

          Code:
          dim msg as c = ""
          if eval_valid("cmd")
          dim ID as n
          ID = SearchEditNotif_S_ID
          dim fn as c
          fn = "G:\COMMON\CDC\Data Manager\AlphaFive\images" + "\\"+ FiletoUpload.filename

          				file.from_blob(fn,FileToUpload.data)
          			    msg = "<a href=\"/" + FileToUpload.filename + "\" target=\"_blank\">" + FileToUpload.filename + "</a> was uploaded<br /><br />"

          	tbl=table.open("attachment")
          	tbl.enter_begin()
          	tbl.Imagefilepath=fn
          	tbl.Date = NOW()-30
          	tbl.Caseid = ID
              'save_to_file(ID,"c:\test.txt")
          	tbl.Text = attachtxt
          	tbl.enter_end(.t.)
          	tbl.close()
          And now I get the error:

          500 Internal Server Error
          "Script Error
          Error:Script: /LivePreview/ImageUpload.a5w line:6
          ID = SearchEditNotif_S_ID
          Variable "SearchEditNotif_S_ID" not found."

          Any ideas?

            Re: Pass parameter to web page

            Let's take a step back. At the POINT where the URL would have that long search value, then the variable SearchEditNotif_S_ID would be valid. If you are pressing a Submit button after searching, then I guess at that point the parameter is no longer in the URL.

            So, on your A5W page, include code like this right at the top, not within any IF statement looking for "cmd",

            if eval_valid("SearchEditNotif_S_ID")
            session.id = SearchEditNotif_S_ID
            end if

            Then in your script, use:
            tbl.Caseid = session.id

            rather than
            tbl.Caseid = ID.

            session.id will always contain the ID from the last time you searched. If you NEVER searched, then session.id may be blank or non-existent. So you would have to deal with that posibility by either ensuring it always exists at the time it is needed, or some other failsafe.

              Hi Steve

              Thanks for your patience. It looks like it has solved the problem, I'm stoked. Its not working 100% because its throwing a SQL server constraint error, but through the save_to_file(session.id,"c:\test.txt") command I can see that the value is being passed. Would this value be a character value Steve? I need to insert numeric values back into SQL server, so I think thats why the error is coming up

              Many thanks again, I have blown hrs trying to sort this one

                Hi Steve

                I just answered my own question for a change. As soon as I declared the session variable as n, the record was inserted into SQL Server

                Cheers
