Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Have Web Components changed??

    Hello

    Have been struggling with SQL data validation errors not showing in Internet Explorer, and just noticed a difference in my web components. Web components that I created earlier (say back in August) have five sections:

    Grid Component - Echo
    Grid Component - Update Errors
    Grid Component - Search
    Grid Component - Data
    Grid Component - Detail

    However, if I created a web component today, it only contains three sections:

    Grid Component - Search
    Grid Component - Data
    Grid Component - Detail

    My guess is that the difference may have been caused by my downloading the latest patch for version 9 sometime in Sept. I read the release notes but didnt see anything referring to a change in the individual components that make up a web component

    Is this any chance that the Echo and Update Error sections allow errors from the SQL dbase to be shown in the browser? The web components I designed earlier do show SQL errors, but the later web components do not show SQL errors

    Many thanks for any assistance

    Jason

    Re: Have Web Components changed??

    Hello again

    I think I have solved this one. As soon as I added an echo and update section within the web component, the SQL validation errors now show in the browser. Perhaps a tip for others, if you are connecting to a SQL dbase, and you have data validation built into the back end, perhaps the echo and update parts of your web component are necessary, not optional?

    Cheers

    Jason

      Hi Jason
      You said: "As soon as I added an echo and update section within the web component" this solved the problem. I have the same problem with ver 9. Can you tell us how you added the echo and update sections? I can make the changes to the a5w page source but I do not have any samples to model my changes on. Can you send me a copy of the source code for the a5w page which has all 5 components
      Grid Component - Echo
      Grid Component - Update Errors
      Grid Component - Search
      Grid Component - Data
      Grid Component - Detail
      Thanks

        Re: Have Web Components changed??

        I found out how to add the update section. The format to include a section is in help under the title: Changing the Locations of the Parts of a Grid Component. First I put my component in an a5w page. I do not need a search for my component so I replaced the reference in the a5w page source
        <%A5 x_memcrossoffgrd.Output.Body.Search_HTML %> with
        <%A5 x_memcrossoffgrd.Output.Body.UpdateErrors %>
        and that installed the update section. Now validation errors from Result.Cancel = .t. and Result.ErrorHTML = "some text" in the canupdate event shows up on the web page.
        But can anyone help me override some of the component settings for the UpdateErrors section. I would like to remove the word "Row" and even change the words "Validation Errors" in that section. I can not find a list of component settings that refer to the UpdateErrors section.

          Re: Have Web Components changed??

          Well I think I found a better solution. I want more control over the validation error for a grid component. So I did not include the UpdateErrors section after all but instead used a grid override to put my own error message above the grid.
          I put the following code in the canupdate event:

          with PageVariables
          Result.Cancel = .f.
          Result.ErrorHTML = ""
          if (Args.DataSubmitted.R1.Cand1 = "yes").and.(Args.DataSubmitted.R1.Time1 <> "yes")
          Result.Cancel = .t.
          Result.ErrorHTML = ""
          with tmpl_memcrossoffgrd
          EditRegion.Grid.Top = <<%html%
          <font size="3" color=#ff0000>You selected a candidate but no time.</font>%html%
          end with
          end if
          end with

          This works really nicely with much more control then using Result.ErrorHTML and the UpdateErrors section.

          Hey Jason, I hope you don't mind my hogging this tread. I would have started my own but I did not know where it was going when I first asked for your help.
          Regards
          Irwin

            Hi Irwin

            Sounds like you have it sorted, well done. I am a real novice and havent used A5 for quite a while, but from memory I think I simply added code within the table tags at the base of the a5w page. Once I inserted these I was able to display messages to the end user

            Sorry to be so vague, its all a little hazy. Have attached the code I was referring to, the lines in bold are the ones I added in

            Cheers

              Thanks Jason.
              If you had not set me on the right track I would still be spinning my wheels. I would never have even seen the Update Errors section. I wonder why ver 9 stopped including it by default.
              This forum is really useful.
              Best wishes.

                Hi Irwin,

                I am trying to get this to work in a A5v9 database.

                I have placed the following code in the 'canupdaterecord' event.

                Result.Cancel = .t.
                Result.ErrorHTML = ""
                with tmpl_TabbedGridLinker
                EditRegion.Grid.Top = <<%html%
                <font size="3" color=#ff0000>Please enter a 'Target Date' to continue.</font>%html%
                end with

                When I run it, i get

                Validation Errors
                Row 1:

                Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

                  Re: Have Web Components changed??

                  Hi Denis
                  Maybe the confusion is due to: in post #4 I included <%A5 ?x_memcrossoffgrd.Output.Body.UpdateErrors %> and then in post #5 I omitted that error section in the a4w page when I put the code in the component. Are you still including the error section? Using the code you put in the canupdate event should show the error message you want and if you include the error section you will get the validation error message too.
                  I hope this helps. I even hope I am right.

                    Hi Irwin,

                    Thank you for your response.

                    I placed the following code (RED) in the a5w page.

                    Code:
                    <table>
                      <tbody>
                      <tr>
                    	[COLOR="#FF0000"]<td><%A5 ?x_TabbedGridLinker.Output.Body.UpdateErrors %></td>[/COLOR]    <td><p align=left><%A5 ?x_TabbedGridLinker.TabbedGridLinker.Output.Body.CompleteHtml %></p></td>
                    </tr></tbody></table>
                    ...and i placed this code at the top of the CanUpdateRecord event within the grid component, so it would run immediately.

                    Code:
                    Result.Cancel = .t.
                    Result.ErrorHTML = ""
                    with tmpl_TabbedGridLinker
                    EditRegion.Grid.Top = <<%html%
                    <font size="3" color=#ff0000>Please enter a 'Target Date' to continue.</font>%html%
                    end with
                    I attempted to open the a5w page in my browser and got this error.

                    500 Internal Server Error
                    "Script Error
                    Error:Script: /issues/grdL_show_dep.a5w line:329
                    ? ; ?x_TabbedGridLinker.Output.Body.UpdateErrors ;?;?crlf()
                    Property not found
                    x_TabbedGridLinker.Output subelement not found."

                    Unfortunately, the Tabbed GridLinker component does not split out errors, search, detail etc. within the a5w page. It seems to combine them into CompleteHtml. So i am stumped as to how I would deal with this dilemma.

                    If you have any ideas please let me know.

                    Thanks again,

                    Denis

                      Re: Have Web Components changed??

                      Hi Denis
                      I confirmed your observations and have no new suggestions. As you said the addition of <td><%A5 ?x_TabbedGridLinker.Output.Body.UpdateErrors %></td> to the web page generates an error (although its inclusion is not necessary in this scheme). But worse, the code in the CanUpdateRecord is ignored except for Result.Cancel = .t. which generates a validation error. The validation error is displayed on the web page as "Validation Errors Row 1:", just what we wanted to avoid.
                      Can you give up the tabed gridlinker? The code in the the code in the CanUpdateRecord does work for simpler grids.
                      Good luck,
                      Irwin

                        Thank Irwin. But I have found an alternative solution by placing a javascript popup on a response.redirect. Unfortunately, this only allows for a single popup per field check.

                        Thanks again for trying to help me. Much appreciated.
