Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Adding Child Record to Web Application

In ver. 10, your new record in the child grid will automatically inherit the parent table (grid) linking value - w/o any coding. In v10 you wouldn't use a gridliker, but a row expander or equivalent.

        Thanks Peter,
I see a number of videos where the row expander shows the results of data already inserted but I cannot see where or how the data gets inserted.
Do you know of any videos which demonstrate say adding invoice lines to the invoice header in a row expander?

Not sure. There are so many videos. But really, it's simple. In your child grid, set the appropriate property to allow adding new records. There are several ways to do this. For example, you might have a read only grid w. an editable detail section, or you might have an editable grid allowing new records. It depends upon how you set up your grid. The key thing to remember is, you MUST include the fields that you want to update, in the appropriate section of your grid. e.g. If the child grid is read only w. an editable detail section, you must include the linking filed in the detail section to allow Alpha to fill that field when entering a new record. Alpha will fill it in automatically w/o you needing to lift a finger.

Honestly, version 10 is the cat's pajamas!

            Thanks Peter

Do I take it that the method you describe for attaching line items is for V10 and not V9.

I did have a look at V10 but decided that as I dont know much about V9 yet I should not deviate. I also thought that V10 is still on test and not ready for sale yet.

I think that the above method works if you use a grid linker (v9 & previous), but I'm not really sure. It's been so long since I used a grid linker I can't remember. But in v10, you have row expanders, linked content sections and tabbed linked grids (and maybe some others) that will automatically fill the parent linking value in the child grid record.

Think of it this way, v10 is basically 100% backwards compatible w. v9 (except maybe for lookups? - not sure). It's just that v10 has tons of new super-fast & super-powerful AJAX features that if you are using the WAS, you definitely want v10. v10 is still in beta, but as a beta tester, I already bought my copies of v10 and server. Not sure if that is available to everyone yet or what.

                Thanks Peter,
                I am still on V9.
I will have a go at what you describe. Its all good learning material.

I love your enthusiasm about V10, quite inspirational!
                Cheers
