Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Combining data from two tables in a simple grid

I wish to display a list of customers from my customer table. One of the columns is status. The status column in the customer table is simply a number. This can be used to lookup into another table to get the description of the status. So instead of displaying say "2" in the status column, I want to display "On hold".
But I can't see how to combine data from 2 tables in one grid.
I am using a SQL Server database.

you need to create a view that joins the two tables together and then just point the grid to the proper view.

Re: Combining data from two tables in a simple grid

In the Query of your grid, you can also select Base on: SQL Select statement and click Edit SQL to use the genie to create your statement. Just select both tables and link them on the common number between tables. When you finish your select statement, though, make sure to click on the button for Select Primary Key(s). Note that if one of the tables is read-only in the grid, you have to re-set the read-only property every time you edit your SQL Select statement. I don't know if that's by design or a bug, but it took me some trial and error to figure out what was going on.

Thanks very much you two for replying. I had thought of using a view, but this becomes problematic if you try deleting data. The other idea of changing the SQL to be "Base on SQL Select Statement" rather than a table or view seems to be the answer. I hadn't noticed this option before, but have tried it out and it looks to be just what I need. Cheers.

I have done both views and used the statement inside of the component and find that the component way is a little slower, maybe because its building basically the view as its loaded. As for deleting data both would probably have the same results on the tables.

Also if you like using the genie you can have a look at the native text statement and copy and paste it into whatever type of SQL program you use to build views.

Thanks Chad. I'm feeling my way through this thing and only after later thinking about your reply I wondered if creating views wouldn't be easier and/or faster. You answered both.

Re: Combining data from two tables in a simple grid

This was a simple way to display data, but because a SQL view can't have a primary key, trying to add records in A5 grids based on views doesn't work the same (at all?). Is it accurate then to say that basing grids on SQL views is only for viewing purposes?

I would say that views should only be used for viewing data because I don't think that you can rely on all flavours of SQL to handle a view in exactly the same way when deleting and addng data.
