Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Client cannot access session_folders

I have an application that copies documents to the logged-in users session folder, then displays it to them or downloads it, depending on the file type. Some users report that they are denied permission to access this session folder. Anyone else hear of this before?

Steve, is this represented as a 403 error?
    ''
I have also noticed 403s appearing when the database has been changed.
However as the server is supposedly 'stateless' (eg it doesn't remeber anything from one request to the next), this should not be the case.
    ''
Also I guess, this behavior is erratic, eg not dependant on browser or user?

I'll have the user test it at some specific time of the day and then check my RAW logs. That should tell me what is up. So far, it's only one company using any of their office computers that don't have access.

        Re: Client cannot access session_folders

I believe the process is this
browser connects to - Server -- -Then session Folder is created
User Logs in to WAS - ---------- Access enabled to session folder
        -
But I have noticed several instances if the session folder name not being exactly the same as the session id-- Typical example is search-bot.
        -
So if your user has changed there user agent identifier settings, for example which sould cause this, the session folder would not be accessible.
So that might be something to look for in the RAW.LOG,
        (Are there settings standard?)

          Re: Client cannot access session_folders

I wish I could just get a list of who creates a session folder, when and their IP address and User-Agent. I probably can figure out how. On a typical day I have 20-40 session folders in the session_folders directory at any given moment. My session timeout is one-hour, so it keeps any created or last-active within the last hour. My website does get some heavy traffice from other Alpha developers, but most of the folders belong to bots. It's hard to read through all the log entries, so I use WebLog Expert to get tailored lists from the logs.

            WebLog Expert
I think the weblogs all use a standard format which is what the ACCESS.LOG is in. I made a Dbf based A5 app for analysis of this also, but it was incredibly slow .
The raw_request log is where the juicy debugging info is, however it grows so fast that I personally find it quite incomprehensible. I have searched for an APP for managing the RAW_REQUEST File but haven't found anything yet.

What I have started doing, is
I have added Ajax Callbacks to my pages and too activities, Now I send these to a server page that Adds Records etc, to my own dbf-Log.
This slows down the site mildly but it is giving me a more useful log.
            --
To Note: AJAX is causing a lot of garbling of statistics. Every callback can be classified as a hit, but on the other hand a full AJAX based website eg web2 will have fewer real pages served.
