Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    email from WAS

    I am trying to send an email from the WAS via Outlook using 'email_smtp_open' etc. I don't want to edit the email prior to sending. I simply want a standard email to go to the same email address each time a grid submit button is pressed - so that I receive notification of the grid submission by a third party.

    I am struggling to get it working and I'm not certain I'm putting my code in the right place - the AfterUpdateRecords in the Events area of the component. Would it be easier for me to call 'email_smtp_open' from the table when it gets updated?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been scouring the board and the help files for days now.

    Christmas Greetings

    I think I might achieve the desired result via an Event in Table Field Rules so I am moving my query to the Desktop section

      Larry,

      AfterUpdateRecord is the correct place. But what code are you running (show it here), and what if any error messages are you getting, and/or what happens when you click submit?

        Re: email from WAS

        Hi Gary,
        I tried several variations on the following:

        DIM ps as P
        DIM pm as P
        pm.from = "mail.atmymail.com"
        pm.to = "[email protected]"
        pm.subject = "Website Lead"
        pm.message = "Someone has submitted a lead"
        IF email_smtp_open(ps, "mail.atmymail.com")
        email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
        END IF
        Email_smtp_close(ps)

        On clicking submit my browser successfully opened my 'Thank you' page and a new record was raised on my desktop app. I received no error messages.

        The reason I then decided to try and accomplish it from the table on the desktop is that I can use Action Scripting in the Table Field Rules and I thought it might be easier - I am still very weak on the coding front. However, though my script worked on a button, it would not work from within the field rules when new records were raised from the WAS.

        I am now considering using Alpha's mailer as opposed to Outlook - in the hope that it will be easier??

        Any help is greatly appreciated.

          Hi Larry,

          e_to="youremailaddress"
          e_subj="Welcome!"

          e_msg=""
          e_msg="<html>You have successfully registered."+"<br>"

          vTo = e_to
          dim pm as P
          dim ps as P
          dim email_result as l
          flag = email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.aol.com", 25, "yourscreenname", "yourpassword")
          if flag = .f. then
          '?"error"
          'end
          end if
          pm._to = vTo
          pm.from = "youremailaddress"
          pm.from_alias = "yourscreenname"
          pm.subject = e_subj
          pm.attachments = ""
          pm.html_message = e_msg
          email_result = email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
          email_smtp_close(ps)

            Re: email from WAS

            Hi Gary, and thanks for supplying the code. Sadly, I still failed to send an email using your code. I have re-studied the help file and have tried to simplify the code as much as possible by dropping the optional items. I now have:

            function AfterUpdateRecords as v (Args as P, PageVariables as P)
            with PageVariables
            dim pm as P
            dim ps as P
            if (email_smtp_open(ps, "mail.myserver.com")) then
            pm.to = "[email protected]"
            pm.from = "[email protected]"
            pm.subject = "Lead"
            pm.message = "There is a new inquiry"
            pm.html_message = "<HTML><B>There is a new inquiry</B></HTML>"
            email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
            end if
            email_smtp_close(ps)
            end with
            end function

            But still no luck. The record is updating correctly and there are no error messages.

              Re: email from WAS

              Things like this should not be tested in a grid event. Take your same code and place it in a code-only A5W page and run it. Then isolate your problem by inserting debug messages like:

              ?"got past the IF statement"

              right under the if statement. If the code makes it past that point, it will display the text in the browser. Doing this in a grid event brings up too many unknowns.

              All of your email functions here return a status. Test each function to see if it is working or failing.

                Result!!!:)
                Many thanks for the help. Running my code on the A5 page was good as it quickly pointed me to a PW issue. The "optional" user name and password appears to have been my problem. I did not have them in my alpha email profile (my Outlook is set to remember the PW and allows me to successfully send email from my Alpha Desktop apps). As soon as I put them in it worked.
