Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Add quantity of records to be added from a dropdown selection

    Hi,

I need to enable my users to add a quantity of items from a dropdown selection on a grid. For instance, if a user selects an item from a dropdown, i need to place a quantity box next to the item so that if they select Apples and type in 4 in the quantity box, i get 4 sepearte Apples records.

    e.g.

    DROPDOWN - Apples
    QUANTITY - 4

    ID---DESCRIPTION
    01---Apples
    02---Apples
    03---Apples
    04---Apples

I cannot work out how i can achieve this. Can anyone help?

    Thanks,

    Denis

Re: Add quantity of records to be added from a dropdown selection

I don't know if this is the best way to solve this but I have a similar situation and this is how I was thinking of solving it.

I have products that come in a variety of sizes and colors. I need to be able to input quantities for a size if required.

I figured out how to get the individual sizes for the products via sql distinct query and got stuck. I had the thought to pass the data to a new table (QUANTITIES) with columns for invoice #, prod_id, color, size, qty, cost.

I guess I would need all of that in a grid component so the user could input individual quantities for each of the available sizes for that product.

I am relatively new at this and have no idea if this is the right way to accomplish this but I thought I would share. If I'm dead wrong maybe I will find the answer with you.

    Thanks
    Darryl

I learned the Application Server doesn't recognize the INSERT command so just when I thought I was getting somewhere with this program I am back to square one.

      sorry for interrupting your thread.

Re: Add quantity of records to be added from a dropdown selection

I have an application where the user picks a site and a range of dates and the app creates a record for each day in the date range.

I cheated, of course, and did it with a dialog and xbasic, which was easy, but if you are a purist and want to do it in a grid, then here's what I would do. Create a quantity field in the table which will only be used for this purpose. This in the can insert record event save one record, then in the after record insert event open the table and insert quanity - 1 more records.

Thanks for your response Pat. I am not sure what needs to be done for 2 and 3.

              1. Create a quantity field in the table OK
              2. In the can insert record event save one record ?
              3. In the after record insert event open the table and insert quanity - 1 more records ?
