Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid Link to open another page

    Hello All

I understand you can use a calculated field inside a grid to build a link capable of opening another browser window, but this seems only available to those who have A5 datatables? I am using SQL as the backend, and as soon as you choose AlphaDAO, you lose the calculated field functionality. I have read another thread from Dan Blank that said you can use the row number field and change it to a link, but even if that could work, I was wanting to insert say 5 links to external pages for editing purposes IOW using the grid as a springboard to edit individual components relating to the primary grid record

Has anyone done this with SQL as the backend?

    Cheers

    Jason

There are a couple ways to do what you want.

I'm thinking for starters, go to the Fields section of your grid builder. Under the "Available Fields" column is an Insert link. Click that and look at your options.

Does that give you what you need?

      Hi Steve

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately I cant access those options. At the bottom of my available fields, I have row number and logicalrecno. Outside that under the insert layout command, I have column spacer, row spacer, merge cells begin and merge cells end

Am I looking in the right place?

      Cheers

Re: Grid Link to open another page

            Hi Mike

Sure, no problem! Only reason I didnt explain my solution is because I am an A5 'novice' at best, and assumed most gurus such as yourself and Steve Workings could sort this with your eyes closed.

Dealing with a sql backend, I dont have access to the calcuated fields option (I needed 5 fields capable of springboarding into individual a5w pages with their respective grids), but after reading this thread:

            http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...nk+within+grid

and reading the explanation from Steve Bovino, I just put together a sql query and pulled through the unique ID field 5 times and gave each of them a different alias. I then pulled all the fields from the sql query into a grid, converted the 5 unique ID fields into link fields, and then connected each of those to child grids by making the link address type 'computed from fields in the grid', linking the ID's in each grid via the link address and then finally setting the child grid to open in a new window.

Without this forum and the goodwill of others far more knowledgeable than I, there is no way I could have got my very basic front end up and running

            Have a great weekend

            Cheers

            Jas

              Thanks Jason,
Always nice to have a solution for each thread whenever possible....makes the message board a place to find the solutions instead of only asking about them!
